4 July in Ferrari history: Michael Schumacher’s four-stop French GP win
4 July marks one of Ferrari’s most distinctive strategic victories. At the 2004 French Grand Prix, Michael Schumacher won at Magny-Cours with a four-stop plan that helped him defeat Fernando Alonso.
2004: An extra stop becomes the route to victory
Fernando Alonso led the early running, and Michael Schumacher struggled to pass the Renault on track. Ferrari’s answer was to change the shape of the race through shorter stints and an additional pit stop.
Refuelling was permitted at the time, so shorter stints also allowed lighter fuel loads. The plan depended on Michael Schumacher producing enough speed in clear air to recover the time spent making an extra visit to the pits.
Ferrari’s execution turned that calculation into victory. Fernando Alonso finished second, with Rubens Barrichello third in the other Ferrari.
Why the Magny-Cours strategy remains memorable
The race illustrates how track position, fuel load and pit-stop timing interacted in the refuelling era. Matching the leading car’s approach offered limited opportunity, so Ferrari created a different route to the finish.
Michael Schumacher’s result depended on the driving and the strategy working together. Our Michael Schumacher career statistics place the victory within his 2004 season.
