Charles Leclerc revealed that a lack of battery energy prevented him from defending against Max Verstappen after a spectacular opening-lap overtake at the 2026 United States Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver ultimately finished second behind Mercedes race winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli, securing his second consecutive podium after Singapore, but admitted that victory remained the missing piece of an otherwise encouraging weekend in Austin.
The Monegasque produced an excellent performance at Circuit of the Americas, including an ambitious outside overtake on Max Verstappen during the opening lap and an impressive final stint on hard tyres. The updated Ferrari SF-26 showed some of its strongest qualities around the Austin circuit, although Charles Leclerc was ultimately unable to challenge Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the win.
Charles Leclerc explains battery problem after Max Verstappen overtake
Charles Leclerc’s battle with Max Verstappen began immediately after the start. The Ferrari driver executed a particularly demanding outside manoeuvre through the circuit’s sweeping opening sequence of corners, known as the Snake, moving ahead of the Red Bull in a move that required considerable commitment.
However, the advantage did not last. Max Verstappen reclaimed the position at Turn 16 after Charles Leclerc ran short of battery energy, leaving the Ferrari driver unable to defend effectively against the Dutchman.
Speaking after the United States Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc reflected on his performance, the opening-lap battle and the circumstances that prevented him from retaining the position.
“It was a good race for us. We missed out on victory, which is always the objective. Overall, we had good pace, although the first stint was difficult. A one-stop strategy like Antonelli’s? That wasn’t in our plans. We didn’t have any more pace.”
“It was a good race with Max, a great battle at the start too. The first lap? It was a tricky overtake, but I really enjoyed it. However, I then had little battery energy left to defend myself. But the feeling was there, and I expected to be fighting again later in the race. Overall, it was a good race.”
The comments explain why Charles Leclerc was able to complete such an impressive move early in the Grand Prix but could not immediately establish himself ahead of Max Verstappen. Despite losing the position, the Ferrari driver remained confident in the car’s performance and expected another opportunity to challenge later.
Ferrari’s Austin upgrades help Charles Leclerc secure another podium
The second-place finish marked Charles Leclerc’s second consecutive podium following the Singapore Grand Prix. It was another positive result for Ferrari, which had arrived in Austin with an updated aerodynamic package for the SF-26.
The car displayed some of its best characteristics around Circuit of the Americas, building on the encouraging signs already seen during practice. Ferrari had introduced four key aerodynamic changes for the United States Grand Prix, while its Friday performance had suggested that Charles Leclerc could be competitive in Austin.
Following the difficult opening stint, Charles Leclerc switched to medium tyres before completing the final phase of the race on the hard compound. During that last stint, the Ferrari driver was the fastest car on track for several laps, allowing him to renew his challenge against Max Verstappen.
Ferrari’s mechanics also contributed with excellent pit stops, helping Charles Leclerc remain in contention against the Red Bull throughout the Grand Prix.
Charles Leclerc explains why Ferrari never considered a one-stop strategy
One of the important differences between Ferrari and race winner Andrea Kimi Antonelli was their approach to tyre strategy. The Mercedes driver completed the Grand Prix with a single pit stop, whereas Charles Leclerc followed a two-stop strategy involving soft, medium and hard compounds.
Asked whether Ferrari could have attempted a one-stop race similar to Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s, Charles Leclerc made clear that the option had never formed part of the team’s plans. The Monegasque also acknowledged that Ferrari did not have the additional pace needed to challenge the Mercedes for victory.
The contrasting approaches illustrated the importance of tyre management throughout the Austin race, a subject that had already attracted attention after Pirelli highlighted the strategic challenges facing teams at Circuit of the Americas.

Charles Leclerc fights back against Max Verstappen as Lewis Hamilton misses podium
Despite losing the position to Max Verstappen early in the Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc remained in the fight with Red Bull. The Ferrari driver made particularly effective use of the hard tyres during the closing stages, when he was able to maintain a strong pace and close on the cars ahead.
Charles Leclerc first overtook Lando Norris before passing Max Verstappen to reclaim second place, completing a strong recovery and securing another podium for the Scuderia.
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, did not have the same pace as his Ferrari teammate. The seven-time world champion nevertheless recovered to fourth position, although the late Virtual Safety Car prevented him from mounting a final challenge against Max Verstappen for third.
Ferrari therefore completed the United States Grand Prix with Charles Leclerc in second and Lewis Hamilton in fourth, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli remained beyond reach at the front of the field.
Charles Leclerc looks towards Mexican GP after another Ferrari podium
Although Charles Leclerc was satisfied with his overall performance, the absence of a victory remained a disappointment. His comments reflected the difference between securing another valuable podium and achieving Ferrari’s ultimate objective of winning races.
The result nevertheless added another strong finish to the Monegasque’s campaign, extending his podium sequence to two consecutive Grands Prix. For further coverage of his performances throughout the season, readers can follow the latest Charles Leclerc Ferrari news and race analysis.
Attention now turns to the Mexican Grand Prix, where Ferrari is expected to face another demanding challenge. The circuit is considered particularly difficult for the Maranello team, meaning the Scuderia will need to build on its Austin performance as it looks to remain competitive against Mercedes and Red Bull.
