Ferrari Set to Continue with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton in 2026 Amid Ongoing Driver Market Speculation

Ferrari’s 2026 driver roster is already confirmed, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton preparing to enter their second season as teammates at the Scuderia. Despite this official lineup, speculation continues to swirl regarding the long-term futures of both drivers, with the Italian team reportedly keeping tabs on several other talents across the Formula 1 paddock.

Lewis Hamilton has faced a challenging debut season with Ferrari, struggling to consistently deliver results, while Charles Leclerc may be growing frustrated with the team’s lack of progress after completing seven seasons as a Ferrari driver. These dynamics have fueled rumours that Ferrari could explore potential replacements or additional driver options in the near future.

Carlos Sainz Remains on Ferrari’s Radar as His Stock Rises at Williams

One driver who Ferrari knows intimately is Carlos Sainz, who has emerged as one of the standout performers in the second half of the 2025 season with Williams. Although Carlos Sainz has not been ruled out as a future Ferrari option, it appears that many rival teams are closely monitoring his situation in the 2027 driver market, recognising the value of a proven and versatile competitor.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Marca, Carlos Sainz initially struggled at the start of the season compared to his new teammate Alex Albon. However, since the summer break, the Spaniard has regained his top form, contributing significantly to Williams’ strong performance. The team is set to finish fifth in the constructors’ championship, and Carlos Sainz has secured two Grand Prix podiums alongside a Sprint Race top-three finish across the last seven race weekends, highlighting his resurgence.

Maranello team principal Fred Vasseur previously acknowledged the former Ferrari driver’s talent in an interview with DAZN, noting that the Formula 1 driver market is highly interconnected. He explained that while the future remains uncertain, both Ferrari and Carlos Sainz are focused on their current projects, though the potential for changes in 2027, 2028, and 2029 cannot be discounted.

Carlos Sainz’s current Williams contract extends until the end of 2027, but it is believed to include release clauses, which could allow both parties to explore alternatives if performance expectations are not met in 2026. Marca suggests it is almost certain that a “top team” will attempt to secure the 31-year-old Spaniard, with Mercedes previously having shown interest. Carlos Sainz’s familiarity with McLaren and Red Bull from his earlier stints with those teams further enhances his appeal, and the prospect of an all-Spanish lineup at Aston Martin would be an intriguing scenario for fans.

Key Figures in the 2026-2027 Formula 1 Driver Market

Very few drivers have confirmed contracts beyond 2026, with Alpine star Pierre Gasly among the latest to secure his future past the next season. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen remains the most sought-after driver on the grid, although he has hinted that dissatisfaction with the new regulations could prompt him to leave Formula 1 entirely. Should Verstappen choose to continue competing for additional titles, Mercedes and Aston Martin are likely to be among the teams keen to acquire his services if Red Bull’s performance falls short.

Other potential 2027 market movers include Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, George Russell, and even Kimi Antonelli, depending on Mercedes’ recruitment strategy. Adding Carlos Sainz to this list of high-profile drivers could create a complex puzzle for team principals like James Vowles, who must weigh current successes against long-term strategic planning. Sainz’s recent podium finishes and consistent form make him a highly attractive prospect, but they also raise challenging questions about where he and other top drivers may end up in the coming seasons.

As the 2025 season concludes and the 2026 contracts approach, all eyes will remain on Ferrari, Williams, and other leading teams to see how the shifting driver market reshapes the Formula 1 grid. With multiple top drivers potentially available, the 2027 season could herald one of the most intriguing reshuffles in recent years.
