Ferrari’s decision not to use team orders during the first part of the 2022 Formula One season was discussed many times before the summer break and will certainly be further discussed. Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto has always talked about the freedom granted to the drivers on track, but at the same time he admitted that there will come a time when the team – and especially him – will have to make decisions and expects the Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to respect this choice. If it will happen starting with the Belgium GP it remains to be seen, the fact is that Carlos Sainz legitimately has the desire to challenge for the top spots as long as possible and this should will help for Charles Leclerc at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps.
For now there are no final decisions made by Scuderia Ferrari regarding how to manage the power units on the two F1-75 cars for this second part of the season. However, according to information gathered by Paolo D’Alessandro and Giuliano Duchessa for formu1a.uno, only the Monegasque driver will take penalties this weekend and will start from the back of the grid, while enjoying a fresh engine and above all an updated hybrid, MGU-K and updated battery.
This part of the Power Units is attracting the curiosity of many, not only for the Prancing Horse, but also for the other teams, as most of the engine manufacturers are ready to mount here the latest engine update granted by the regulation (exception made for reliability) before the complete development freeze until 2026. In fact, while Mercedes is almost certain to use the updated engine, there is still some reserve on Red Bull as to whether and possibly who will mount the latest evolution of the Honda engine.
Carlos Sainz mounted a new engine in France, after the big fire in Austria, while Charles Leclerc had his last two Power Units in Canada, then preparing to take penalties in Belgium, also with strategic management regarding the exhausts. In Spa-Francorchamps, therefore, Ferrari is preparing to add more power unit elements available for Charles Leclerc – plans include the debut of the updates on Friday and then the other new components on Saturday, for a completely new engine – aiming for a comeback race, while it will be up to Carlos Sainz try to get the most out of F1-75 and, if possible, win or at least challenge Red Bull from a championship perspective.

As for the Spaniard, we recall how from this year, with the changes decided during the season, all teams can – as done in Hungary by Red Bull with Max Verstappen after the engine problem suffered in Qualifying – also replace engine components under parc fermé rules, between qualifying and race, therefore offering more possibilities to the teams in managing the power unit components during the weekend.
