Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes aim for so-called performance convergence in the 2024 Formula One season. In other words, they hope that Red Bull’s dominance weakens for a clear reason: within the regulatory framework, there is a technical path that essentially has a beginning, middle, and end. In the competitive hierarchy, the Austrian team is much higher, making it significantly closer to the maximum achievable level.
This means that these two teams have a theoretically higher potential for improvement. However, while hypotheses are easily put forward, until practice confirms these assumptions, it all remains speculative. It’s crucial to note this before speculating on the future of the upcoming F1 season, which concerns Ferrari and Mercedes. Yes, reaching and perhaps beating the Milton Keynes team remains quite challenging, despite everything.
One of the main reasons relates to the performance that the reigning champion team has been able to maintain this year. We are talking about intentionally avoiding an unnecessary step. The reason is quite simple: despite not updating the RB19 since early summer, the impressive Austrian car continued to win without much trouble. Perhaps with a slightly smaller margin, but still more than enough for peaceful dreams.
This wise decision was made by Adrian Newey, aware that firing additional “competitive bullets” was not necessary to achieve the set goal. Moreover, boasting even more in the bragging rights wouldn’t have added any value to Red Bull. Thus, based on the data, keeping significant resources available for future use could greatly benefit the team led by Christian Horner.
Red Bull “intimidates” for 2024: Ferrari and Mercedes choose different approaches to rise again
To beat Red Bull requires a miracle. This succinctly captures the thoughts of many when considering 2024. Yet, some are convinced they can compete with the Austrian team and will undoubtedly try. Mercedes and Ferrari are tired of losing and utilized every single session during the just-concluded season to advance work on future projects. However, the approach they will use will be different. Both perspectives could be valid.
The Prancing Horse has chosen not to overhaul the SF-23. Instead, they want to adopt the approach used by Newey last year. This decision aims to maximize the positive aspects of the car, if possible, enhancing them. While the car’s flaws need correction, the same configuration is maintained, seeking to improve the overall value of the car.

In doing so, Ferrari does not want to give up the great traction and longitudinal acceleration that characterized the 2023 red car. They also aim to enhance the already good minimum cornering speeds and further improve aerodynamic efficiency. On the other hand, tire management, front-end entry, and competitiveness in high-speed corners must be perfected by the technicians in the Ferrari Racing Department.
Mercedes, on the contrary, starts from a clear premise that, in fact, the editorial team at Formula Uno Analisi Tecnica reported in advance in Toto Wolff’s recent comments. The Austrian manager asserts a fact: to have a chance to beat Red Bull without continuously relying on it, the W15 project must be overhauled. Innovation based on functional concepts is crucial, considering that, while the risk is real, changing every single part of the car is the right path.
Undoubtedly, the challenge is tough, but after all, in F1, little progress is made without courage. Remembering the serious evaluation error on the “zero pod” concept, although almost everything will change in the next German car, the new technical concepts will aim to be factual, trying to minimize the margin of error as much as possible. Winning aerodynamic concepts combined with some changes to the power unit electronics will provide greater competitiveness to the German engines for the next year.
In the end, it remains challenging to understand which of the two strategies, Ferrari or Mercedes, will be more suitable for this comeback that both teams have in mind. Both could be valid or not. Therefore, we can only wait and see what happens during the competitive campaign of 2024, a stage where observing the Red Bull dominance is no longer considered.
