2023 F1 updates recap: Red Bull ends car development in September, Ferrari from Suzuka

The 2023 Formula 1 season has been particularly dynamic concerning car development, even more so than the previous championship, especially for the mid-to-lower-ranked teams. At the forefront, Red Bull has been conservative in the updates developed at the factory, confident in its superiority, allowing resources to be redirected early to the 2024 F1 project. The development of the world champions primarily focuses on the Baku and Budapest stages, where new sidepods accompanied by updates to the floor arrive, and in the Barcelona race, where a new diffuser makes its debut. The last significant update to the RB19 comes in the Singapore Grand Prix, introducing a new floor.

The Pursuers
The most significant package for Ferrari in the season is at the Spanish Grand Prix, where the SF-23 renews its bodywork in the direction of Red Bull-style sliding sidepods. However, development work in Maranello mainly focuses on the floor, introducing new versions in Jeddah, Miami, Barcelona, Austria, and Suzuka, the latter being the novelty that concludes Ferrari’s 2023 development. Mercedes continues to evolve the W14 until the United States Grand Prix, where a new floor makes its debut. Development in Brackley begins with the substantial update package in Monte Carlo, where the front suspension is also renewed. Additionally, a new slanted sidepod bodywork debuts in the Principality, later refined with the updates in Spa.

McLaren is the protagonist of block-by-block development, with updates concentrated in a few but significant packages. The stages marking the evolution of the MCL60 are Baku, followed by the Austria-Silverstone doubleheader, and finally, the floor-bodywork package introduced between Singapore and Suzuka. However, for frequency and the number of changes, the most active team during the year is AlphaTauri, which introduces an entirely new floor even in the last race in Abu Dhabi. Here is the list of all updates and tech innovations brought by the teams during the 2023 Formula 1 season:
