Luigi Mazzola’s insights began with a focus on the new floor (underbody aerodynamic component) introduced on both Ferrari cars, the SF-25s: “I would wait until the Silverstone Grand Prix before making any final judgments, because Austria is a very particular and unique circuit.” The Italian emphasized that the new floor definitely provided some aerodynamic advantage, explaining, “I’m confident Ferrari would not bring a floor to the track that doesn’t generate additional downforce.”
Regarding the performance gap, Luigi Mazzola pointed out that while Ferrari was about 40 seconds slower than Mercedes in Austria, he prefers to hold final judgment until Silverstone. However, the distance from McLaren has not improved, which left both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc disappointed. “Both drivers were clearly unhappy about that,” Luigi Mazzola added.
When asked about the direction Ferrari must take to improve, Luigi Mazzola was clear: the team needs to accelerate its development program, introducing upgrades at every Grand Prix, and push their limits as much as possible. “They need to get moving, work day and night, and try to extract the maximum from this season,” he said.
He further stressed the importance of competing at the highest level, considering that Formula 1 is a World Championship. “Ferrari simply cannot afford not to be at the top. Given the current situation, at the very least, the goal should be to fight for second place and be the best of the rest outside the frontrunners.” – the former Ferrari team member pointed out.
Luigi Mazzola concluded with a call to action: “More work is essential; sitting back and saying ‘let’s see next year’ would be a losing mentality, both for this year and for the next.”
What do you think? Do you agree with Luigi Mazzola’s assessment? Should Ferrari fight to the fullest to honor this season or instead shift focus away from the SF-25 and start preparing for the major regulation changes coming in 2026?
