Rafael Câmara has admitted he was caught completely off guard by the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut with Haas at the 2026 São Paulo Grand Prix. The Brazilian Ferrari Driver Academy youngster has been promoted to a race seat following the team’s separation from Esteban Ocon, bringing forward his planned arrival in Formula 1 by several months. Although delighted to make his debut in front of his home crowd at Interlagos, Rafael Câmara faces a demanding challenge with limited Formula 1 testing experience, an unfamiliar circuit and the possibility of rain throughout the weekend.
The unexpected promotion has also raised questions about his Formula 2 championship campaign, where he remains in contention for the title. While gaining race experience with Haas ahead of his full-time move in 2027 could prove invaluable, the Brazilian has made clear that decisions about his immediate future will be discussed after the Grand Prix.
Rafael Câmara’s surprise Haas F1 debut follows Esteban Ocon departure
Last Friday evening, Rafael Câmara’s career took an unexpected turn. The separation between Esteban Ocon and Haas during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend created a vacancy for the final four rounds of the 2026 Formula 1 season, leaving the American team to decide who should occupy the seat before 2027.
In Mexico, the decision was relatively straightforward. Ryo Hirakawa had already participated in the opening free practice session as part of the rookie-driver programme, making his promotion for the remainder of the weekend the most logical solution. The choice ultimately proved successful, with the Japanese driver taking advantage of favourable circumstances to score a championship point.
However, Ryo Hirakawa is committed to the World Endurance Championship this weekend, where he is fighting for the title. With the Japanese driver unavailable, Haas needed an alternative and turned to the driver already scheduled to occupy the seat in 2027.
That decision handed Rafael Câmara the opportunity to make his Formula 1 debut at his home Grand Prix. It is difficult to imagine a more memorable setting for the beginning of his F1 career, although the circumstances also bring considerable additional pressure.
Ferrari and Haas testing helped Rafael Câmara secure 2027 race seat
The Brazilian’s promotion has come with very little warning, creating something of a baptism of fire. His experience behind the wheel of Formula 1 machinery has so far been limited to Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) sessions conducted with Ferrari and Haas.
Nevertheless, those outings proved particularly important in convincing the American team of his potential. Rafael Câmara impressed Haas with his speed during testing, approaching the benchmark times established by Oliver Bearman and persuading team principal Ayao Komatsu to offer him a full-time seat for the 2027 season.
The youngster has consequently earned a reputation as a raw diamond, possessing exceptional natural speed, particularly over a single qualifying lap, but still requiring further development and experience.
One unusual aspect of his upcoming debut is that, despite being Brazilian, Rafael Câmara has never driven at Interlagos. The short notice also prevented him from travelling to England to prepare with Haas before the weekend. As a result, his race seat is expected to be modelled on the one he used during previous TPC sessions.
Fortunately, the Brazilian already had some preparation scheduled for the São Paulo Grand Prix, albeit under very different circumstances.
Ferrari simulator preparation gives Rafael Câmara a starting point
Before the unexpected Haas opportunity emerged, Rafael Câmara had been due to participate in Friday’s opening practice session with Ferrari as part of the programme dedicated to young drivers.
That arrangement meant the Brazilian had already completed simulator sessions to familiarise himself with Interlagos and the characteristics of the current generation of Formula 1 cars. Although Ferrari’s SF-26 and Haas’s VF-26 are different machines, the experience provides a useful foundation for his first Grand Prix weekend.
With three practice sessions available, Rafael Câmara will have an opportunity to build on that preparation as he learns the Haas car and adapts to the circuit.
“I was very surprised. It certainly isn’t where I expected to make my Formula 1 debut. But I’m really happy about this opportunity and very grateful to the team for the trust they’ve shown in me this week. So yes, I’ll simply try to enjoy my home race and have fun on track,” Rafael Câmara explained during interviews.
The young Brazilian also acknowledged the value of the simulator work he had already completed with Ferrari, even though his original plans for the weekend have changed significantly.
“In the end, I had already done some simulator work with Ferrari, because I was scheduled to take part in my first free practice session. It was useful to complete a few laps in the simulator. From my point of view, I’m mainly trying to learn as much as possible. There will be a lot of things to manage, but I prefer to approach this experience positively.”
The original plan for Rafael Câmara’s Ferrari FP1 appearance in Brazil has therefore evolved into a considerably bigger opportunity. Instead of completing a single practice session with the Scuderia, he is preparing for his first full Formula 1 race weekend with Haas.
Rafael Câmara embraces pressure of racing in front of Brazilian fans
Making his debut at the São Paulo Grand Prix adds a special emotional dimension to the occasion. Rafael Câmara has not raced in front of his home supporters for some time, making the unexpected opportunity particularly meaningful.
Rather than focusing on the pressure of representing Brazil on Formula 1’s biggest stage, the youngster intends to concentrate on his own performance and use the weekend as an opportunity to learn.
“Racing in front of my home crowd is something I haven’t experienced for a long time. So I just want to enjoy the weekend and have fun. Obviously, it won’t be easy, but what always helps me is focusing on my job, doing what I need to do properly and making sure I learn something every time, continuing to make progress.”
The weather could make the challenge even more complicated. Forecasts suggest that rain may disrupt both qualifying and the race at Interlagos, introducing another variable for a driver with limited experience in Formula 1 machinery.
Rafael Câmara has frequently been described as particularly sensitive to tyre behaviour, while he himself identifies his single-lap performance as one of his main strengths. Those qualities could prove valuable as he begins adapting to the demands of a Grand Prix weekend.
The 2026 Brazilian Grand Prix schedule will provide the framework for his first official sessions, with the rookie facing a busy programme as he learns both the car and the circuit.
Will Rafael Câmara complete the Formula 2 season after his Haas debut?
Despite his sudden Formula 1 promotion, Rafael Câmara still has unfinished business in Formula 2. The Brazilian remains near the top of the championship standings and is continuing to fight for the title.
His longer-term Formula 1 future is already established, making additional mileage in the Haas VF-26 particularly valuable ahead of the 2027 season. However, there is another important consideration: completing his Formula 2 campaign with a championship victory would represent a significant achievement.
That is also the view of fellow Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto, who believes finishing the F2 season as champion would carry considerable importance despite Rafael Câmara’s confirmed Formula 1 future.
Haas has not officially clarified its plans for the remainder of the season. Ryo Hirakawa technically remains available as a reserve driver, although giving Rafael Câmara as much preparation as possible ahead of 2027 appears a plausible option.
For now, the Brazilian is unwilling to make predictions about how the situation will develop. His immediate priority is to make the most of his unexpected opportunity at Interlagos before discussing what comes next.
“I think we’ll discuss it after the weekend, to prepare for how things will work in the future. At the moment, we’re not really talking about it. We just need to make sure we do a great job this weekend, and then we’ll see what happens. But I don’t predict the future.”
For Rafael Câmara, the opportunity to begin his Formula 1 career on home soil has arrived far earlier than anticipated. With limited preparation, challenging weather potentially awaiting him and a Formula 2 title still at stake, the São Paulo Grand Prix represents both an unexpected reward for his progress and an important first test of his readiness for the next stage of his career.
