Ferrari Driver Academy prospect Rafael Camara has made clear that his ultimate ambition is to secure a full-time Formula 1 seat, as the Brazilian continues to fight for the 2026 Formula 2 title with Invicta Racing. With his championship challenge gaining momentum and rumours already linking him with a future F1 opportunity, the 21-year-old remains focused on making the most of the chance currently in front of him.
The Recife-born driver is currently the highest-placed Ferrari Academy member in Formula 2 and sits third in the championship after the Hungarian round. Rafael Camara is now only 22 points behind Campos Racing leader Nikola Tsolov, putting him firmly back into contention as the season enters a crucial phase.
The Budapest weekend proved particularly costly for Nikola Tsolov, who made a mistake in the Sprint Race that left both himself and Prema driver Sebastián Montoya without points. Rafael Camara, meanwhile, strengthened his position with third place in the Feature Race, further reducing the gap at the top of the standings.
Rafael Camara makes his Formula 1 ambition clear
Rafael Camara is competing for Invicta Racing in Formula 2, one of the strongest teams in the championship, and the Brazilian is fully aware of how valuable the opportunity could prove for his career.
“Not many people have this opportunity, especially being in a team that is one of the best in F2 and having the chance to fight for the championship. So I want to make the most of it and enjoy every moment,” Rafael Camara explained.
With Formula 1’s silly season under way, rumours have already suggested that Rafael Camara could emerge as a candidate for an F1 seat. His longer-term future is also attracting attention as Ferrari evaluates the progression of its young drivers, with Rafael Camara and Oliver Bearman among the talents linked with Ferrari’s future plans.
Rafael Camara does not hide his ambition to reach Formula 1 full-time, but he is determined not to become distracted by speculation while the Formula 2 championship remains unresolved.
“It’s nice to see that you’re an F1 contender, but at the same time I don’t want to get my hopes up too much because I’m still competing in a very important championship, and if I do well, it’s very likely that I’ll get my opportunity. So, from my side, I’m focused on this year,” he said.
Ferrari F1 tests gave Camara valuable experience
The reigning Formula 3 champion and Ferrari Driver Academy member has already been able to experience Formula 1 machinery, having driven Ferrari single-seaters during several test sessions. Those opportunities represented an important personal milestone for the Brazilian after years of work towards reaching the highest level of motorsport.
“You always dream of driving a Formula 1 car. My parents were there, and it’s something the whole family has worked towards for a long time, so it was very special for me and for my family,” Rafael Camara recalled.
He added that his ultimate goal is naturally to compete in Formula 1 on a full-time basis. His Ferrari testing experiences were highly emotional, but Rafael Camara also understood that stepping into an F1 car brought professional responsibilities alongside the excitement.
“You try to enjoy it as much as possible, but you also have to do a good job. It was a very enjoyable experience to understand how things work in Formula 1. Obviously, sometimes I had been there during race weekends, but it’s very different when you are the driver. I learned a lot with them,” Rafael Camara concluded, referring to his work with Ferrari.
For now, the Brazilian’s immediate priority remains Formula 2. With only 22 points separating him from championship leader Nikola Tsolov after Budapest, a strong finish to the season could further strengthen Rafael Camara’s case for a future opportunity in Formula 1.
