Oliver Bearman and Jack Doohan will return to the track during the first practice session at Silverstone with Haas and Alpine, respectively. For the British driver, a young talent from the Ferrari Academy, it will be his third of seven scheduled outings for this season, while the Australian will be back at the wheel of the A524 after already running in Canada.
During the championship, each team must give space to debutants in at least two practice sessions, giving them the opportunity to get closer to the world of Formula 1. Teams often rely on talents from their respective academies or drivers with commercial agreements.
Several rookie drivers, who have completed a maximum of two Formula 1 Grands Prix, will return to the track at Silverstone. Among them will be Franco Colapinto with Williams, announced on Monday, and Jack Doohan with Alpine, with the latter taking Pierre Gasly’s place in FP1.
For the Australian driver, this is another opportunity not only to demonstrate his qualities to the team but also to test the 2024 car, providing a direct reference from the track for his simulator work. For drivers dedicated to virtual reality, it is crucial to have chances to understand the car’s behavior on a real track, to give even more feedback to engineers on how to improve the car. The Australian will also be involved in a test at Silverstone with the 2022 car later this month, where Mick Schumacher will also be driving.
Jack Doohan already completed the first of the two mandatory outings at the last Canadian Grand Prix. An unusual choice, but Alpine explained they wanted to bring forward these mandatory tests so the official drivers could participate in all sessions in the second half of the year, when theoretically the car should be more competitive, and it will be necessary to exploit all opportunities to gain valuable points for the standings.
However, Jack Doohan will not be the only debutant on the track this weekend. In addition to the aforementioned Franco Colapinto, Oliver Bearman will also return to the wheel of the Haas during FP1 of his home Grand Prix, which will be his third outing in the VF-24 this season. Ferrari, as the young British talent is part of the Prancing Horse Academy, and the American team have decided to complete a program that includes seven FP1 sessions throughout this championship, with the first two held at Imola and Barcelona.
For Oliver Bearman, who seems increasingly close to Formula 1 with Haas, the test represents another chance to get more familiar with a top-tier car through an intensive preparation program. This week, Oliver Bearman will again combine his commitments with the American team with those of Formula 2, a championship in which he is currently competing with Prema. Despite a challenging and unsatisfactory start to the season, the young FDA talent secured his first victory in the championship during the Sprint Race on Saturday at the last round in Austria.
