Ferrari Driver Academy member Niccolò Maccagnani will compete in the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship with Trident Motorsport, marking another important step in the young Italian driver’s rapidly developing career. The Milan-based team has officially announced an agreement with the promising talent, who will move into the category on a full-time basis after gaining his first Formula 3 experience during the final round of the 2026 season.
Born in Rome on 28 August 2010, Niccolò Maccagnani has progressed quickly through the junior single-seater categories since making his competitive debut in 2025. The move to Trident represents a significant opportunity for the Ferrari-backed driver, who will now face the challenge of competing in a championship featuring faster cars and a higher level of competition than those he has encountered so far.
Ferrari junior Niccolò Maccagnani joins Trident for 2027 Formula 3
Italian motorsport continues to produce promising young talent, and Niccolò Maccagnani is the latest driver preparing to take an important step up the single-seater ladder. Trident Motorsport has confirmed that the Ferrari Driver Academy member will race for the team throughout the 2027 FIA Formula 3 Championship.
The agreement follows a rapid rise through the junior categories. Despite his young age, the Italian has already demonstrated competitive pace and achieved encouraging results in several championships, establishing himself as a driver capable of progressing quickly.
His promotion also forms part of Ferrari’s wider investment in developing young drivers. The Maranello manufacturer’s academy continues to support promising talents across multiple categories, with the 2027 Ferrari Driver Academy line-up reflecting its commitment to preparing the next generation of racing drivers.
Niccolò Maccagnani’s rapid rise through Formula 4
Niccolò Maccagnani made his single-seater debut in 2025 following an intensive testing programme that prepared him for the transition into international Formula 4 competition.
His first races came in the Formula 4 South East Asia Championship, where he immediately made an impression. Across six races, the young Italian secured six podium finishes, including three victories, demonstrating strong competitiveness from the beginning of his single-seater career.
Despite participating in only the final two rounds of the championship, Niccolò Maccagnani finished fourth in the overall standings. The result underlined the impact of his performances, particularly considering his limited participation compared with drivers who contested more of the season.
Following those encouraging results, the Rome-born driver competed in the closing rounds of both the Italian Formula 4 Championship and the E4 Championship, gaining further experience in a highly competitive environment.
He subsequently entered the Formula Trophy, a championship consisting of three events, and finished second in the overall classification. That result provided another important step in his development as he continued to accumulate experience against international opposition.
First Formula 3 experience in Madrid before full 2027 campaign
Niccolò Maccagnani’s progression continued in 2026, when he received the opportunity to make his Formula 3 debut at the final round of the championship in Madrid.
That appearance allowed the Ferrari Driver Academy member to begin familiarising himself with the machinery he will race throughout the 2027 season. Having already experienced a Formula 3 race weekend, the young Italian will enter his first full campaign with some knowledge of the category and its technical demands.
The move represents a substantial increase in the level of competition compared with Formula 4. The cars are faster and the championship brings together talented drivers who have already demonstrated their abilities in junior single-seater racing.
For Niccolò Maccagnani, joining Trident provides the opportunity to continue his development within an established Formula 3 team while building on the experience gained during his first two seasons in single-seater competition.
Trident team manager Giacomo Ricci welcomes Ferrari Driver Academy talent
Following the announcement, Trident Motorsport team manager Giacomo Ricci expressed his satisfaction at securing the Italian driver’s services for the 2027 season, highlighting both his potential and the challenge awaiting him in Formula 3.
“We are very happy to announce the arrival of Niccolò Maccagnani at Trident Motorsport. Niccolò is a young driver who has already shown that he possesses speed and potential, standing out in the junior categories,” Giacomo Ricci explained.
The Trident team manager also acknowledged that moving into FIA Formula 3 represents an important increase in difficulty compared with the championships Niccolò Maccagnani has contested so far.
“The FIA Formula 3 Championship will represent an important challenge, with cars and levels of competitiveness higher than those he has faced until now. We are ready to give Niccolò our full support in this new phase of his career, working together to encourage his development and allow him to make the most of his qualities and play a leading role in a competitive season.”
For Ferrari, the agreement represents another opportunity to assess the progress of one of its young prospects as he advances towards the higher levels of single-seater racing.
The manufacturer’s commitment to developing future talent remains an important part of its long-term motorsport strategy, with the Ferrari Driver Academy’s record of developing Formula 1 prospects illustrating both the opportunities and challenges associated with preparing young drivers for the highest level.
Niccolò Maccagnani will now prepare for his first complete FIA Formula 3 season with Trident Motorsport, aiming to build on his promising Formula 4 results and the initial Formula 3 experience gained in Madrid. His 2027 campaign will provide a more demanding test of the speed and potential that have already earned him a place within Ferrari’s young-driver programme.
