With a 12-year career in Formula 1 and three third places in the drivers’ standings, former Red Bull driver Mark Webber is following the 2021 world championship of the highest category of motorsport with great interest. The Australian confessed to eagerly awaiting the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, who can finally count on a Red Bull capable of challenging Mercedes, and then turned his thoughts to Carlos Sainz, who recently switched to Ferrari to partner Charles Leclerc in 2021 and 2022.
“Being at Ferrari means being part of a team with a higher level of intensity. Formula 1 is tough, but Ferrari is even more so, because any driver suffers from the difficult environment, because Ferrari is a religion in Italy” – Mark Webber said in an interview for Spanish national daily sport newspaper ‘Marca’ – “The driver is always a target, if the team makes a mistake, the scapegoat is always the driver, because the car is never the problem. I like Carlos Sainz very much, he is motivated and hungry. He deserves to be in F1, he is very fast and will have a very tough opponent in Charles Leclerc. He will have to do everything very well, from qualifying to the relationship with the team. I believe that Ferrari is oriented towards maintaining this pair of drivers for a long time. We’ll see if he can do better than Charles, it will be difficult but you never know. Meanwhile, he got off to a good start and could give Leclerc a headache.” – explained the 2015 WEC winner with Porsche.
In his long time in Red Bull, Mark Webber also shared the box with Sebastian Vettel, precisely in the years of his 4 world titles. The Australian analyzed the difficulties the German is facing in recent years: “I think Vettel’s confidence at the moment is incredibly low. His time at Ferrari did not go well. I think this generation of cars doesn’t suit Sebastian very well, he prefers cars with a lot of grip and downforce. For him this is a problem, it is not for Hamilton, for example, who is always strong.” – the former Formula 1 driver concluded.
