As we reported a few days ago, Scuderia Ferrari has decided to hire several engineers from Red Bull, including Enrico Balbo, former aerodynamics manager of the Milton Keynes team. Frederic Vasseur’s goal seems to be to create a new team “marking a break with the Sergio Marchionne/Mattia Binotto era philosophy”.
This is the claim of Leo Turrini, who has commented on the matter in his recent article on the quotidiano.net website. Below are some of the most important comments expressed by the well-known Italian journalist.
Leo Turrini: “Vasseur is building his team”
“More than a month ago, I wrote that Fred Vasseur had received the green light from the company’s board of directors for a massive recruitment campaign. In terms of engineers, this marked a break with the philosophy of the Marchionne/Binotto era, which excluded the use of “external” high-level professional figures,” Leo Turrini points out.
He then adds: “The flop of the SF-23, which has never been competitive to fight for victory so far, triggered a change of perspective. After the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Fred Vasseur presented his plan to Ferrari’s top management. Without hiding anything. This is why Mattia Binotto’s close collaborators (aerodynamicist David Sanchez, sporting director Laurent Mekies, others will follow) are leaving and new forces are emerging.”

On the new arrivals, the Italian journalist explains that “the names, to the general public, say little. Formula 1 engineers are genius “nerds,” usually annoyed by popppp publicity. The excellent Enrico Balbo, who has learned a lot from the magician Adrian Newey, will return to Italy. Ferrari will go shopping among…the Red Bull shelves, from which two other professionals will come. Attention: not that the Red Bull are worried: at the time, Aston Martin took a lot of technicians from Chris Horner, in fact Fernando Alonso’s car is the surprise of the season, but in the meantime, Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez win all the races.” – Leo Turrini continued.
Finally, the journalist concluded his analysis by underlining: “The trouble, to be blunt, is that these additions (from Red Bull and beyond) will not be immediately effective. According to the rules governing the Formula 1 market, the new employees will only be operational in Maranello in a few months, in 2024. And in the meantime, Charles Leclerc is waiting…”.
