Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto confirmed that his team will have their fingers crossed for a dry British Grand Prix on Sunday after Spanish driver Carlos Sainz took the first pole position of his Formula One career earlier today at the Silverstone Circuit ahead of Red Bull rival Max Verstappen, while Charles Leclerc will start the race from third place.
Carlos Sainz was himself surprised to find out he took pole position due to the fact that the Spanish driver felt he had more to give after his last qualifying lap at Silverstone.
But Carlos was indirectly helped by a mistake made by Charles Leclerc as his Maranello teammate spun on his final Q3 run which led to and a yellow flag that prevented Max Verstappen from completing his final fast lap:
“We could see it on the GPS, we knew, but he thought the lap was not good enough! It was tricky for everyone out there but he set the best one,” said Mattia Binotto, in an interview for Channel 4 at the end of the qualifying session.
The current weather forecast for tomorrow points to a dry British Grand Prix, while the rainy start to the Silverstone weekend did not allow teams to properly evaluate the ideal strategy options, as Mattia Binotto confirmed:

“Tomorrow, we are hoping that it will be dry. I think it will be a guess between one stop or two, it will be something teams will decide after a few laps by looking at the tyres,” he explained.
“We’ve not had a lot of dry laps so for, or many on high fuel. I think we’ll have different strategies on the track and that will be great.” – the Ferrari boss concluded.
