Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto admitted he was impressed by the efforts of Carlos Sainz from last season, as the Spanish driver worked hard to quickly study and understand the Maranello team, which helped with his fast integration.
In 2021, Carlos Sainz left McLaren and moved to Scuderia Ferrari with the difficult task of replacing four-time Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel and partnering the talented Charles Leclerc.
The 27-year-old’s arrival at the Italian side was followed by an extensive period of preparation during which Ferrari made all the efforts to help Carlos adapt to his new working environment in Maranello. When asked about Carlos Sainz’s positive first year with Scuderia Ferrari, team principal Mattia Binotto wanted to highlight the importance of the pre-season program that had been put in place to facilitate its new driver’s integration.
“I think it has been obtained as well through quite a big effort through the wintertime. With [the] engineers, he was often at Maranello, sitting down [with them], going through the car, the procedures. So it has been a lot of work back in Maranello, on the simulator, trying to prepare [for] the season. I think that we’ve seen the result of such an effort. We had a session of driving in Fiorano with an old car, just before the first testing, so everything was put in place [to] try to help Carlos for his integration.” – Mattia Binotto added.

Ferrari did everything possible to help Carlos Sainz make the most out of his first Formula 1 season with the Maranello team, but at the same time Mattia Binotto admitted that the Spaniard deserves a lot of credit for working tirelessly to understand his new team:
“[It] certainly has been very good on his side as well. He has been very good because he is a good learner. He is studying, he’s trying to learn, he’s trying to understand, and I think he has been consistent in his integration and development in terms of performance for the season as well.” – the Ferrari boss concluded.
