São Paulo’s Interlagos is one of the most stunning Grand Prix tracks, an iconic institution in Brazil where Formula One races have been nothing short of exhilarating and unpredictable.
Brazil’s deep motorsport roots date back to the 1930s when it hosted its first Grand Prix races. In the same decade, the construction of the bowl-shaped Interlagos circuit began, marking the nation’s first permanent racing venue.
Since 1973, Interlagos has hosted 39 F1 races as part of the championship, with the Brazilian Grand Prix taking place here 37 times. Starting from 2021, the event was renamed the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Over these 39 World Championship races, 25 different drivers have claimed victory.
Among all drivers, Michael Schumacher holds the record for the most wins at this circuit, with four victories. Among the current grid, three drivers have previously won Grands Prix at Interlagos. Lewis Hamilton leads the pack with three wins, while Max Verstappen secured his first Brazilian Grand Prix victory in 2019, and George Russell achieved his maiden Grand Prix win at Interlagos in 2022.
In terms of teams, Ferrari boasts the most wins at Interlagos, with nine victories, edging out McLaren by one. Mercedes is the most successful engine manufacturer, with a Mercedes-powered car clinching victory for the 11th time in 2022. The track has witnessed ten occasions where a team secured a 1-2 finish, most recently in 2022 when both Mercedes drivers finished first and second. Mercedes shares the record for the most 1-2 results at Interlagos with Red Bull.
Ferrari, Benetton, Williams, McLaren, Red Bull, and Mercedes are the six teams that have secured successive victories at Interlagos. No team has managed more than three consecutive wins at this circuit.
The narrowest winning margin at Interlagos was in 2002 when Michael Schumacher won by just 0.588 seconds. In contrast, his 1994 victory had the largest winning margin, with Schumacher lapping the field, marking both the biggest winning gap and one of the last occasions a Grand Prix was won by more than a lap.
Michael Schumacher boasts the highest number of top-three finishes at Interlagos, with ten podium appearances. In terms of teams, Ferrari leads with 28 podium appearances at the circuit.
Seven drivers, including James Hunt, Ayrton Senna, Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen, Rubens Barrichello, Felipe Massa, and Nico Rosberg, have secured consecutive poles at Interlagos. Mika Hakkinen and Felipe Massa share the record for most consecutive poles, each achieving three in a row between 1998 and 2000 and between 2006 and 2008, respectively.
In total, 2,530 Grand Prix racing laps have been completed at the Interlagos circuit. Michael Schumacher holds the record for the most laps raced at the track, completing 1,233 laps on Sunday afternoons. Fernando Alonso had the potential to surpass Schumacher’s tally at the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
Out of the 898 cars that entered a Formula 1 race at Interlagos, 867 qualified for races, with all but five starting the race. Of the 862 cars that started races here, 555 crossed the finish line, resulting in an overall finish rate of 64%. The highest number of drivers to finish a race at the track was 23 in 2010, while the 1977 Brazilian Grand Prix saw the fewest finishers, with only seven of the 22 starters completing the race.
