For the new Formula 1 season, teams will have less of a reference point to each, Scuderia Ferrari Sporting Director Laurent Mekies explained. The sport heads into the 2022 campaign with a lot of unknowns given the completely new rules and regulations as everyone has started its 2022 project from zero.
Formula 1 bosses are confident that by introducing these new regulations, fans will get closer racing and more drivers will get the chance to fo fight for the top places based also on their abilities, not just the pace of the cars:
“It’s currently unknown where we are compared to the competition. It’s the most difficult time to judge that,” Laurent Mekies said, in a recent interview for Motorsport-Total – “And why is that? I guess because it’s just so different. Everything you were used to just doesn’t work anymore. So the biggest unknown is where we are compared to the competition.” – he added.
Scuderia Ferrari are now ready for the 2022 championship after some encouraging signs last year, in which the Maranello team was involved in a close battle with McLaren and eventually managed to secure third place World Championship. Now the Italian side is fully focused on making sure they can continue improving this season: “The best way to deal with that is to take a good look at our team and say, okay, are these groups working well together, are we efficient in the way we are doing this, is it running smoothly? If so, then we have to assume that it’s the best possible car that we can make with our skills and experience within the company.” – the Ferrari Racing Director explained.

The current induration of Formula 1 car were fast and Laurent Mekies feels that the new technical regulations will not change this: “The cars are so fast now. Even if we stabilise by a few seconds, say two seconds less, does that change anything for anyone? Probably not”
When asked how long before the speed will return, the French engineer said: “I think it has to do with how much freedom we have and how much we will be released after a certain time.”
Scuderia Ferrari, who will officially launch its 2022 challenger on February 17, has high expectations this season and hopes it will be able to fight Mercedes and Red Bull for race wins at least on specific tracks. The 2022 Formula One campaign starts with the Bahrain Grand Prix from 18-20 March, kicking off a record-breaking 23-race schedule.
