Ferrari supporters have cautiously lifted their expectations for the 2026 Formula 1 season following comments from team principal Fred Vasseur at the Japanese Grand Prix, where he hinted that the championship standings could look very different by the time the Miami Grand Prix arrives.
Vasseur’s strategy of prioritizing 2026 regulations over the 2025 season is already showing results. The Scuderia had halted development on the Ferrari SF-25 in April of last year to fully focus on optimizing the Ferrari SF-26, ensuring their wind tunnel and simulation programs were entirely dedicated to the new regulations.
Despite Ferrari’s preparation, Mercedes have dominated the opening rounds, with George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli producing an undefeated start to the season. The Silver Arrows lead the Constructors’ Championship by 31 points after the first two races, putting Ferrari behind in the early fight for supremacy.
In the individual standings, Charles Leclerc has achieved a podium finish at the Australian Grand Prix, while Lewis Hamilton secured a third-place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix. In the Shanghai Sprint, Leclerc finished P2, placing him one point ahead of Hamilton but still 17 points behind early leader George Russell, highlighting the challenge Ferrari faces to close the gap.
Fred Vasseur hints Miami could bring a ‘different championship’
Mercedes appeared set to continue their advantage at the Japanese Grand Prix, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli taking pole and the team completing a Mercedes one-two on Saturday, while Charles Leclerc qualified P4 and Lewis Hamilton P6, leaving Ferrari with work to do on race day.
However, the enforced break between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia has created a window for Ferrari to regroup and refine their upgrades. Fred Vasseur suggested that the championship dynamics could shift dramatically in Miami, signaling cautious optimism among the Tifosi.
Vasseur told Sky Sports Italy that while the team is not entirely satisfied with the start to the season, the focus remains on podiums and race wins. He emphasized that Ferrari still faces a performance deficit to Mercedes but remains close enough to challenge in the coming rounds. He also highlighted the importance of consistent point scoring and the rapid rate of development expected over the season, implying that strategic upgrades and precise execution could make Miami a pivotal race for the Scuderia.
Fans react with excitement and caution to Vasseur’s claims
The cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix has made the Miami Grand Prix the fourth round of the 2026 season, providing all teams with an extra opportunity to refine their packages. Ferrari is expected to debut their Macarena rear wing in Miami, which was withheld in Japan due to track-specific restrictions on straight-line mode zones, although engine upgrades remain unavailable due to ADUO regulations, which govern Additional Design and Upgrade Opportunities for engines falling behind performance benchmarks.
Vasseur’s comments have sparked a mixture of hope and caution among Ferrari fans online. Some expressed excitement that the championship could change in Miami, while others warned against raising expectations too high. Reactions on social media ranged from “Please don’t lie to us” to “Fred is cooking,” illustrating both the intrigue and skepticism surrounding Ferrari’s potential to close the gap to Mercedes.
Looking ahead: Miami could redefine the early championship
With Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both poised to extract the maximum from the Ferrari SF-26, the Miami Grand Prix could prove critical for narrowing the deficit to George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Fred Vasseur’s hints, combined with Ferrari’s focused upgrades and development strategy, have given the Tifosi a renewed sense of optimism, even if Mercedes remain the benchmark in the early season.
The race in Miami represents more than just another round: it could be the first opportunity for Ferrari to demonstrate that their deliberate 2026-focused strategy can translate into tangible performance gains, potentially reshaping the championship battle that has begun in favor of the Silver Arrows.
