Lewis Hamilton faces a crucial period in his debut season with Ferrari, as the upcoming triple-header of Formula 1 races could define public perception of his first year with the Scuderia. Currently, Hamilton sits sixth in the drivers’ championship, trailing teammate Charles Leclerc by 66 points, and remains without a podium in his first 21 Grand Prix weekends for Ferrari.
Despite two top-three finishes in the Sprint Races in China and Miami, those results have largely been overshadowed by Ferrari’s ongoing internal tensions, heightened after chairman John Elkann’s comments following a disappointing Sao Paulo Grand Prix. Hamilton’s performance this season, combined with Ferrari’s overall competitiveness, could determine how long he remains at Maranello, despite reportedly holding a three-year contract.
Oliver Bearman tipped as Hamilton’s eventual replacement at Ferrari
Motorsport analyst Alex Jacques has suggested that Haas rookie Oliver Bearman is already on track to succeed Hamilton at Ferrari once he retires. Speaking on the Inside the Piranha Club Podcast, Jacques highlighted Ollie Bearman’s rapid rise through the junior categories and his strong recent performances in Formula 1.
Jacques explained that Ollie Bearman’s drive in Mexico, where he overcame difficult overtaking conditions and fended off competitors despite early-season qualifying struggles, demonstrated the maturity and skill that mark him as a future Ferrari driver. According to Jacques, the Haas driver’s resilience is repaying the faith placed in him by his team, especially after a challenging second year in Formula 2.
“Bearman has always been destined for that Ferrari seat once Lewis decides to retire,” Jacques noted, emphasizing that the young driver’s path to the iconic red car has accelerated due to his recent standout performances in Formula 1.
2026 Ferrari car performance will influence Hamilton’s decision
The competitiveness of Ferrari’s 2026 car will be key in determining Lewis Hamilton’s future at Maranello. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see if the Scuderia can return to winning form, providing both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc the tools to challenge for Grand Prix victories. Should Ferrari fail to deliver a competitive package, preparations may already be underway for Ollie Bearman to step into Lewis Hamilton’s seat in 2027, particularly if the seven-time champion’s motivation wanes.
Jacques emphasized that Ferrari’s performance during pre-season testing, particularly at the Bahrain test, will offer the clearest indication of the team’s prospects. He pointed out that body language during press conferences and team interactions often provides immediate insight into how confident drivers and engineers feel about the car.
Engine development progress and future challenges
Hamilton has reportedly witnessed significant improvements in Ferrari’s power unit, which will be critical heading into the next season. However, Jacques cautioned that uncertainties remain, as the advancements of Mercedes, Red Bull, and other engine suppliers are unknown until pre-season testing. The coming months will be decisive in shaping both Ferrari’s 2026 campaign and the potential timing of any driver changes.
Ultimately, Ferrari’s ability to combine a competitive car, strategic race execution, and strong internal culture will play a crucial role in determining whether Hamilton remains in the Scuderia or whether a young talent like Oliver Bearman takes over in the near future.
