Ferrari F1: How the SF-26 is being developed to close the gap on Mercedes in 2026. Ferrari analyzes SF-26 performance in China GP 2026.

Ferrari finished the second race of the 2026 Formula 1 season with a podium finish and a fourth place, showing solid performance but also highlighting where improvements are still needed. The Italian team, after a tense duel with Mercedes that was reshaped by the unexpected entry of the Safety Car, turned the competitive battle into an internal fight between their two drivers. That internal battle was ultimately won by Lewis Hamilton, who demonstrated greater consistency and pace throughout the entire weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit. While Ferrari delivered an admirable effort, the Mercedes W17 cars clearly showed superior performance, proving to have a substantial advantage compared to their performance in the opening round in Australia. Understanding the reasons behind this performance gap and analyzing how it occurred is crucial for Ferrari as the team continues to develop the SF-26 and prepares for the upcoming races in the 2026 Formula 1 calendar.

Awareness and analysis at Maranello

Once again, Ferrari demonstrated its strong launch off the line, briefly taking the lead at the start of the race. Both Ferrari and Mercedes had elected to start the race on medium-compound tires, signaling a focus on managing the overall race strategy rather than simply gaining positions in the opening moments. Mercedes, on the other hand, appeared to have accepted the disadvantage that comes with such dynamics, primarily due to the impressive launch performance of the Ferrari SF-26, aided by a smaller and more responsive turbocharger.

However, unlike what had occurred at the Albert Park circuit in Australia, the Italian car struggled to maintain any pressure on the Mercedes cars during the opening laps, with no realistic means of responding to the superior acceleration and speed of the Brackley-based team. Charles Leclerc, reporting through the radio from car number 16, highlighted that attacking the Mercedes cars was far more challenging in Shanghai, even though the overall setup and conditions had changed only slightly from the previous race. Ferrari had anticipated that their car would be better suited to this specific track layout, yet they were unable to consistently challenge the Mercedes cars at any point throughout the Chinese Grand Prix.

While the first and second sectors of the Shanghai International Circuit did not present significant difficulties for the Maranello team, the losses were concentrated in the third sector, where the SF-26 lost precious tenths of a second, consistently and chronically, relative to the Mercedes W17s. Charles Leclerc’s pace in the first sector was even the fastest on the track, indicating that the Ferrari SF-26 was competitive in the more technical and medium-speed portions of the circuit, but it was in the long straights and high-speed sections where the car could not match the Brackley cars.

China GP: Safety Car and its influence on strategic options

On lap 11, the race went under the Safety Car, creating a significant opportunity for teams to adapt their strategy. Both Ferrari and Mercedes immediately called their cars into the pits. While this situation could have been used to try alternative strategies and save as much as 12 seconds of overall race time, Ferrari understood that even with such an advantage, the team unfortunately could not fully counter the sheer pace and power of the Mercedes cars.

Ideally, Ferrari could have opted to split the strategies between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, something that should have been implemented at the Australian Grand Prix to maximize tactical flexibility. Such a move would have forced Mercedes to respond to multiple different race strategies, potentially creating opportunities for Ferrari to gain positions. However, once again, the Italian side decided to take the safer and more conservative route. All four leading cars—Ferrari and Mercedes—ended up on hard-compound tires.

The plan for Ferrari was to reach the end of the race on hard Pirelli tires, even though George Russell had earlier mentioned that this strategy would be challenging to execute effectively. With the harder tire compound, the dynamics of the first laps were very different. The Mercedes W17 cars, particularly the one driven by George Russell, struggled to maintain tire temperature, which allowed both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to overtake them with relative ease.

Kimi Antonelli, driving the second Mercedes, also faced tire challenges but managed to carefully introduce the tires and optimize their performance over the long stint. The Mercedes W17 cars proved very difficult to attack, benefiting from an extremely strong hybrid power boost and traction, particularly in the exit of turn 13, which feeds into a very long straight where top-end power becomes crucial.

The internal battle between Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc also indirectly benefited George Russell, who was able to close in on both Ferraris and eventually overtake them, albeit with some difficulty due to the competitive pace of the SF-26s. Meanwhile, the two Ferrari drivers continued to battle intensely, with Charles Leclerc experiencing significantly more graining on the front-left tire compared to his Maranello teammate. This imbalance highlighted the challenges of tire management and car setup, which Ferrari must continue to refine for future races.

Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton: improvements needed on energy deployment

Analyzing the race data over the full course of the Chinese Grand Prix, it becomes clear that Ferrari was losing an average of approximately half a second per lap to the Mercedes cars. This gap is considerably larger than what was observed during the Australian Grand Prix and indicates a marked increase in the performance deficit. One of the main areas requiring improvement is energy management, which currently appears to be the most limiting factor for the SF-26.

Additionally, Mercedes benefits from significant advantages from its internal combustion power unit, particularly in combination with the hybrid deployment system. Lewis Hamilton emphasized that Ferrari needs a clear step forward in energy deployment and optimization, and that this improvement must come as soon as possible to remain competitive.

Beyond the clear performance advantage of Mercedes, the Maranello team was also unable to extract the full potential from the SF-26 over the course of the race. Lewis Hamilton acknowledged that both the hybrid deployment and car setup were limiting factors, highlighting the reality that having only a single practice session is insufficient for achieving maximum performance from the SF-26 in the current Formula 1 regulations. Mercedes, by contrast, has a much more comprehensive understanding of their car’s characteristics and behavior, extending well beyond setup or energy management.

Ferrari is currently working intensively to close this gap, analyzing every available data point from Shanghai and identifying areas for improvement. The team now has a week-long break to study all collected information, refine their approach, and prepare for the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix with a more precise and well-defined strategy, aiming to optimize both the SF-26’s setup and the drivers’ performance to reduce the deficit to Mercedes and maximize their competitiveness in future races.

Ferrari has therefore shown moments of strong performance with the SF-26, particularly in the more technical sections of the track and during driver battles, but the Chinese Grand Prix has made it clear that significant work remains. The team must focus on improving energy management, extracting consistent performance from the tires, and fully understanding the hybrid system to close the considerable gap to Mercedes. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc have demonstrated their skill and racecraft, but the car itself must significantly evolve to fully capitalize on their abilities. With a dedicated development program and focused analysis during the upcoming week, Ferrari aims to return to the track in Japan with a clearer vision, optimized strategies, and the ambition to challenge Mercedes more effectively for race wins and championship points.
