Charles Leclerc will have a special role in the Paris 2024 Olympics: the Monegasque driver of Scuderia Ferrari has been chosen to be the torchbearer of the Olympic flame. The Olympic Games will begin on July 26 and will be held until August 11. It is also the 100th anniversary of the last time Paris hosted the Games.
What will Charles Leclerc do? As usual, the Olympic flame is lit in Athens (the “capital” of the Olympic Games) and then travels through various stages before reaching the designated city for the oldest games in the world.
After a long journey, the flame arrives at the destination cauldron, where it remains lit throughout the games. The flame is currently on its journey before arriving at the cauldron that will host it for three weeks in the French capital.
Usually, the flame is handed over to various athletes who, in turn, pass it to each other in a symbolic gesture of unity that originates from sport. Thus, the Olympic flame travels through various countries, with many athletes designated for this handover.
Charles Leclerc has also been called to be a torchbearer in Monaco. The Monegasque driver will be only the second F1 driver in history to have the honor of carrying the flame. Before him, only Lewis Hamilton had the honor of being a torchbearer for London 2012.
The flame will pass through the Principality on June 18, and the Ferrari driver will be there to welcome the Olympic fire. The expected arrival time of the flame is 2:15 PM (local time).
Moreover, the number 16 of the Prancing Horse will be the first torchbearer in Monaco. He was chosen for this role thanks to his victory in the Monegasque principality a few weeks ago, his home race.
