Ferrari: Ex-F1 racing driver foresees intense battles if Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc join forces as teammates. Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 is under intense scrutiny.

Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc as F1 Teammates Could Spark Explosive Rivalry

Max Verstappen’s future in Formula 1 has been one of the most talked-about topics this season, yet the Dutch driver remains fully focused on the next five Grand Prix weekends. Despite a challenging start to the season, Verstappen has consistently demonstrated his championship-caliber skill, keeping fans on the edge of their seats as the drivers’ title race unfolds.

Although no Formula 1 fan ever completely dismissed Verstappen from the title fight, Oscar Piastri’s dominant performance at Red Bull’s home race in Zandvoort created a significant gap, pushing the Dutch driver’s deficit to over 100 points. At that moment, it appeared that the championship battle was nearly over, transforming into a two-horse race between the Red Bull driver and Oscar Piastri. However, since then, Max Verstappen has delivered near-perfect performances, only dropping points when George Russell claimed victory in Singapore.

With Verstappen on track to potentially secure a fifth World Drivers’ Championship, the Dutchman’s gratitude toward Red Bull is clear. Yet, with the 2026 Formula 1 regulations set to overhaul car performance, the competitive landscape will be almost entirely reset. Questions about Red Bull’s ability to maintain dominance under the new rules have sparked speculation linking Verstappen to several other top teams on the grid.

Mercedes has long been rumored to have an interest in Verstappen, and reports suggest that McLaren CEO Zak Brown might explore opportunities to bring the Dutch driver to Woking if circumstances allowed. Meanwhile, Ferrari has also emerged in speculation circles, especially with Lewis Hamilton’s potential retirement on the horizon, leaving a high-profile seat open.

Christijan Albers predicts ‘fireworks’ with Verstappen and Leclerc as teammates

After the United States Grand Prix, former Formula 1 driver Christijan Albers shared his insights on the potential pairing of Verstappen and Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Speaking on De Telegraaf’s F1 podcast, Albers highlighted that the duo would produce “fireworks” if they were to become teammates, emphasizing the intense rivalry between the two drivers.

Christijan Albers reflected on the COTA race, noting Charles Leclerc’s performance in holding up Lando Norris for the first 21 laps, which indirectly benefited Verstappen. He explained that following another car affects tyre temperature and lap times, and despite McLaren being competitive, the Monegasque’s skill in managing tyre performance and maintaining consistent pace stood out.

The former F1 racer praised Leclerc’s ability to maximize traction on soft tyres and navigate both medium and high-speed corners effectively, while pointing out that Ferrari’s car remains strong in tyre management compared to competitors. Christijan Albers concluded that, if Verstappen and Leclerc shared a garage in the future, their combined talent would create intense intra-team battles and electrifying on-track competition.

Could Verstappen and Leclerc actually become teammates in F1?

Both Verstappen and Charles Leclerc have been the subject of ongoing transfer speculation, fueling discussions about potential changes in team line-ups. While the pair have been rivals since their karting days, they have never truly competed directly for a Formula 1 World Championship seat, although Charles Leclerc finished second in the 2022 standings behind Max Verstappen.

Verstappen’s potential move to Ferrari is one of the most frequently discussed scenarios, positioning him as a future replacement for Lewis Hamilton once the seven-time champion retires. Additionally, the Dutchman has pursued opportunities outside F1, including endurance racing with top-tier teams, and Ferrari’s World Endurance Championship program is particularly strong.

Conversely, the Monegasque driver has been linked with Red Bull, but it remains uncertain whether Max Verstappen would accept a driver of Charles Leclerc’s calibre as a teammate in Red Bull. Should the two combine forces under the same team banner, they would instantly become the most formidable driver pairing on the Formula 1 grid.

While such a scenario excites fans and pundits alike, the likelihood of Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc becoming teammates remains speculative. Nevertheless, the prospect continues to generate significant discussion within the paddock and among Formula 1 enthusiasts, as both drivers have proven they can deliver spectacular performances in high-pressure situations.

In summary, whether Verstappen remains at Red Bull or explores opportunities with Ferrari or another top team, the combination of his talent with Charles Leclerc’s exceptional skill could redefine team dynamics in Formula 1. The potential for intense rivalries, strategic clashes, and headline-grabbing moments makes this a scenario that fans will be monitoring closely as the sport moves toward the 2026 regulation changes.
