Scuderia Ferrari has introduced a significantly revised front wing at the Singapore Grand Prix, which had initially been slated for its debut at the United States Grand Prix in Austin. However, the team accelerated its development, showcasing the upgraded wing at the 4.94-kilometre Marina Bay Street Circuit.
According to Ferrari’s senior performance engineer, Jock Clear, the upgrade is aimed at enhancing the car’s front-end performance. The new front wing retains many design elements of its predecessor but features several key adjustments to improve load distribution across its span. The most notable changes focus on the third and fourth elements of the wing, where modifications have been made to optimize load management. Additionally, revisions to the wing tips have been implemented to fine-tune airflow.
The Italian side has emphasized that this upgrade is not specific to Singapore but is designed to deliver performance gains and improve downstream airflow across a wide range of conditions. The updated wing draws inspiration from the innovative designs of competitors like Mercedes and McLaren. In particular, Ferrari has revised the junction between the third and fourth flaps and the side endplate, a critical area where both rivals have demonstrated noticeable flexibility in recent races.
The British engineer further explained that the Maranello team’s focus with this update has been to strengthen the inboard section of the wing, with the goal of achieving better car balance and more consistent front-end grip.
“It’s a very draggy, high-downforce circuit, so [the wing] is not specific for this circuit, but basically, it’s just moving the energy a little further inboard.” – Jock Clear pointed out ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay circuit – “If you look at it closely, you’ll see that the inboard is a bit more aggressive and the outboard a bit less aggressive, so we’ve moved that dynamic a little bit. This allows us to crank on a bit more [downforce]. Here you’re probably going to want to have maximum rear you’re going to want to get a balance.” – he added.
“Balance is everything around here and we’ve been a little bit backed into a corner at some of the high-downforce circuits before, because we’re running out of front power. It’s just a little more powerful at the top end, slightly more efficient, but it really is that it’s a bit more powerful. That gives us a bit more scope.” – Jock Clear concluded.
