After several years of experimentation and adjustments, Formula 1 and the FIA have further changed the weekend format with the introduction of the double race. While awaiting the first Sprint of the 2024 championship, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has shared his opinion on the new format.
In an interview with F1Briefings, Charles Leclerc was questioned on various topics concerning the 2024 Formula 1 season and others related to off-track matters. During the extensive conversation, the Ferrari driver was able to discuss the physical preparation required for a season as demanding as this year’s, with 24 races scheduled. In addition to this topic, Charles Leclerc could express his opinion on the new Sprint format debuting this season.
What do you think of the new Sprint format debuting in 2024?
“It’s something I like as a driver because now in Formula One we have FP1, FP2, FP3, where there’s nothing to play or challenge, except for getting to know the car, which is always nice. But competition is what I love the most. So, having a very important session right on Friday is something I like, and I think the changes will improve it too because now we have the opportunity to change the car after the sprint race, which is a good thing. Because it seems to me that sometimes when you make a mistake, or if you have an accident, there’s no way to recover, whereas now it will be a bit better.” – the Monegasque pointed out.
In a year where championship races have reached a record number, drivers are forced to work even harder. In fact, in addition to on-track activity, there are hours and hours of preparation behind the scenes, both physically and mentally. Training that increasingly turns today’s “drivers” into athletes. But has this aspect prompted Charles Leclerc to change his preparation?

“Actually, I don’t think my preparation is very different” – the Ferrari man explained – “I believe that preparation is always the same. I always try to be as ready as possible, to be the best athlete possible both outside and inside the car. And the preparation remains the same. I think what slightly changes is the time management, what I do in my free time between one race and another. Obviously, with 24 races, you have to be at 100% from the first to the last race. So, what you do between races is even more important. For example, regarding logistics, we might decide to stay between two races instead of going back home and traveling all the time. In this kind of thing, it is very, very important to optimize the time we have left to always give our best.” – Charles Leclerc concluded.
