Considering the competitiveness shown by the Ferrari F1-75 cars in the hands of Charles Leclerc, the start of the 2022 Formula 1 season for his Maranello teammate Carlos Sainz cannot be described as positive. The Spaniard has in fact collected just 83 points after the first eight round of the campaign and is currently in fifth place in the drivers’ standings, 33 points behind his Ferrari teammate, but also 16 behind the Mercedes of George Russell, which this year cannot count on a car as fast as the F1-75 of Carlos. The young British driver, however, has shown an impressive consistency and has been able to make the most of very opportunity this season, taking advantage of Ferrari’s mistakes and reliability problems.
Carlos Sainz has retired three times in 2022 so far, one of which was due to a reliability problem (the last one in Baku): “Due to the first races early on in the season when I was not able to score any points, I lost a lot of ground in the standings and since then I have preferred not to think about the championship” – the Spanish driver honestly admitted, ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend:
“I saw that I was not comfortable enough with the car to aim for pole and wins. Indeed, perhaps the desire to want to win and take pole led to a few mistakes on my part. My strength has always been perseverance and knowing how to wait and usually the end of the year has always been very positive. It is therefore time to be more patient and wait until I my feeling with the car improves, to go back to attacking” – he added.
Carlos Sainz, in a recent interview for MARCA, the Spanish national daily sport newspaper owned by Unidad Editorial, denies that he is suffering due to the too much pressure for waiting for his first career success: “I face every race with the will to fight for victory, from this point of view my motivation does not change. It could also have happened in Monaco, where I could have won”.

The Spanish driver also explained that he liked the novelty of the Sprint races, but has a suggestion for improvement: “I think they have the potential to be an even better show, a separate race from the rest of the weekend. I would appreciate Sunday’s starting grid to be determined by Friday’s qualifying, but I would like a reverse grid for Saturday. Seeing the two Red Bull cars and the two Ferrari cars in the last four and five positions trying to make up positions and get into the points – which should be awarded for the top 10, but with less than 25 points for the winner – would be fun. How the format takes place now it is more just a little more than a separate first race stint.” – Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
