On the power unit front, Scuderia Ferrari took many risks with the 2022 engine, as the Maranello team pushed everything to the limit with the goal of recovering the deficit to Mercedes and Honda. It is no coincidence that Ferrari decided, with the second engine that made its debut on the F1-75 car of Carlos Sainz in Imola and for Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari F1-75 in Miami, to introduce updates which solved some of the reliability problems, in accordance with the FIA rules that allow such update for reliability reasons.
After all, 25 HP cannot be recovered in just a few months as compared to Honda and Mercedes without daring to take risks. However, it is clear that the races must be concluded if you want to fight for the title but certainly a car that had finished in P5 with no potential to fight for the win would have been more disappointing in the Spanish Grand Prix.
At the Circuit de Catalunya, Ferrari also introduced several other important updates, such as a new floor specification which in ground-effect cars is extremely important given that this area generates more than fifty percent of the downforce. The updates version helped Ferrari further fix the porpoising problems, while at the same time giving the Maranello technicians the possibility to lower the floor closer to the ground, which means a slight gain in lap time.
The motivation in Maranello remains maximum. They know what Charles Leclerc can do. Until the power unit issue in Spain, the Ferrari driver had done everything he had to do and was heading to a dominant win. Now Ferrari has to fight back as for the first time in the 2022 Formula 1 season, Red Bull is ahead both in the Formula 1 Driver Standings and the Constructor Standings.
With this in mind, but also taking into consideration the development limits imposed by the budget cap, Scuderia Ferrari will continue work on the next upgrade package and other minor interventions specific for each circuit.
