Ferrari has confirmed that Dino Beganovic will join Antonio Giovinazzi as an official reserve and development driver for the 2027 Formula 1 season. The decision gives the Swedish prospect an expanded role within the Maranello team after a year in which he has gained experience behind the wheel of the SF-26 while continuing to compete in Formula 2.
The announcement establishes Ferrari’s reserve and development driver pairing for next season, with Beganovic remaining closely connected to the Scuderia despite recently completing his time in the Ferrari Driver Academy. He will work alongside Giovinazzi, who already holds a reserve and development role with the Italian team in 2026.
Dino Beganovic joins Ferrari’s 2027 F1 reserve driver line-up
Born in 2004, Dino Beganovic has progressed through Ferrari’s junior development structure while pursuing his ambition of reaching Formula 1. His new position represents another stage in that relationship, allowing the Swedish driver to remain involved in the team’s Formula 1 activities beyond his time in the academy.
The move also provides continuity for Ferrari, which has confirmed that Antonio Giovinazzi will remain part of its reserve and development driver arrangements in 2027. Together, the two drivers will form the pairing selected for these roles as the Scuderia prepares for another season under Formula 1’s current generation of technical regulations.
Beganovic welcomed the announcement on social media, confirming his appointment and expressing his gratitude to the people who had supported and believed in him throughout his career. He described the opportunity as the beginning of a new chapter.
The promotion follows a period of growing involvement with Ferrari’s Formula 1 operations. Beganovic has previously discussed the experience of learning from Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc while working with the Italian team, illustrating the importance of remaining closely connected to its race programme.
Ferrari SF-26 practice appearances helped prepare Dino Beganovic
Ferrari has already given Dino Beganovic opportunities to drive its 2026 Formula 1 car during official Grand Prix weekends. These appearances have allowed him to gain experience in the SF-26 while contributing to the team’s work during free practice sessions.
At the Austrian Grand Prix, the Swedish driver replaced Charles Leclerc in the opening practice session. He participated in Ferrari’s running at the Red Bull Ring, where the team was also carrying out technical evaluations with its 2026 challenger. The outing formed part of Ferrari’s Austrian Grand Prix development programme.
Beganovic also took part in FP1 at the Spanish Grand Prix, this time driving the car normally assigned to Lewis Hamilton. During that session, Ferrari evaluated different specifications of the SF-26, with Beganovic running the baseline configuration while Charles Leclerc tested updated components.
These opportunities were connected to Formula 1’s mandatory rookie practice requirements. Under the regulations described for the 2026 season, each regular race driver must give up two free practice sessions to an eligible rookie, meaning teams with two race seats must complete four such sessions across the championship.
For Beganovic, the Austrian and Spanish appearances provided experience of working within an active Formula 1 race weekend. Such sessions also give young drivers the opportunity to develop their understanding of a team’s technical procedures, car behaviour and operational demands while supporting its running programme.
Dino Beganovic’s 2026 Formula 2 results strengthen his Ferrari progression
Alongside his Ferrari commitments, Dino Beganovic has continued competing in the Formula 2 championship during 2026. The Swedish driver currently occupies fifth place in the standings with 137 points, having secured two race victories during the season.
His first highlighted success came in the Feature Race in Madrid, while another victory followed in the Sprint Race at Baku. Those results have accompanied his growing involvement in Ferrari’s Formula 1 activities and provide an important competitive backdrop to the announcement of his new position.
Beganovic’s development has been closely associated with Ferrari for several years. His progression through the junior categories included the step from Formula 3 into Formula 2, before his recent Formula 1 practice appearances gave him additional experience at the highest level.
His appointment for 2027 means that relationship will continue even after his departure from the Ferrari Driver Academy. Rather than ending his connection with Maranello, the change places him in a new position within the team’s Formula 1 structure.
What Ferrari’s 2027 reserve driver decision means
Ferrari’s confirmation brings clarity to its reserve and development driver arrangements for 2027. Antonio Giovinazzi will continue in the role, while Dino Beganovic becomes the second named driver in the pairing.
The decision follows a 2026 season in which Ferrari’s main Formula 1 line-up has consisted of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, supported by Giovinazzi in his reserve and development capacity. Beganovic’s promotion adds a young driver who already has experience of the SF-26 and official Grand Prix practice sessions.
With fifth place in the Formula 2 standings, victories in Madrid and Baku, and valuable Formula 1 mileage already completed, Beganovic enters this next stage of his career with a combination of competitive results and practical experience inside the Scuderia.
Ferrari has therefore confirmed its 2027 reserve and development pairing, with the Swedish prospect taking another step in his relationship with the Maranello team alongside the more experienced Antonio Giovinazzi.
