According to the Italian media, Scuderia Ferrari have tried out different design concepts and aerodynamic configurations for their 2022 Formula 1 car and eventually decided to choose a slightly bulkier chassis design than rivals Mercedes.
The sport is ready to begin a new era with technical rules that are radically different as compared to the previous championship: a ground effect-led aerodynamic design is being introduced, while the Pirelli tyres increase in size.
All of these changes should lead to a better show on track by improving racing and giving drivers the possibility to follow the car ahead, which in turn should lead to more overtaking moves. If this actually happens remains to be seen, but Formula 1 is confident it is going in the right direction with the new rules.

Scuderia Ferrari officially presented its F1-75 car last Thursday and the next day Ferrari hit the track for the first time, with a demo run at its own Fiorano circuit, which gave fans and the media the ideal opportunity for a detailed look of the new challenger. What stood out were two beam wings crossing underneath the rear wing to create a twin airflow and also the 13 grill slot gaps located on the sidepods – three off which are horizontal – that are most likely used for better cooling.
On the other hand, world champions Mercedes have opted for a much skinnier design than the Maranello team and as reported by the Italian version of Motorsport.com, this idea was also evaluated by the aerodynamics department led by David Sanchez when developing the F1-75 car. However, the Italian media outlet informs that according to their sources in Maranello, Scuderia Ferrari reached the conclusion that the solution used by the team is seven perce percent more aerodynamically efficient than the aero design concept chosen by the Silver Arrows at least for this first stage of development.
Of course, no one knows for now what aerodynamic design will prove to be better than others or which teams will master the new ground effect-led technical regulations, but a first indication will be provided by the pre-season testing session which takes place this week at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona.
