The Formula 1 qualifying session for the 2023 Miami Grand Prix ended early due to a red flag being shown after Charles Leclerc crashed his Ferrari number 16 into the barriers. The Monegasque driver lost control of the SF-23 single-seater in one of the fast corners while trying to improve his time and challenge Sergio Perez for pole position at the Miami International Autodrome in Florida, USA. The Mexican will start the Miami Grand Prix from P1 and as Charles was trying to challenge his fast lap time, the Monegasque crashed violently and hit the wall with the rear of the car.
According to a recent tweet by Formula 1 journalist and tech analyst Giuliano Duchessa, the Ferrari mechanics have finished checking the SF-23 car. They carefully inspected the entire rear of the number 16 car to ensure that the impact did not damage the engine or gearbox components. They had already removed the gearbox for further checks the previous evening.
Giuliano Duchessa stated in a tweet, “After an initial check of Leclerc’s car, everything should be okay (PU and gearbox). However, this does not mean that some components may not be replaced as a precaution.”
It appears that the Monegasque driver’s error did not cause any damage to the key area of the car, so there should be no risk of replacements or possible grid penalties tonight. If there are no further updates, Charles Leclerc will start the Miami Grand Prix seventh ahead of Max Verstappen in ninth.
