Ferrari has completed its development work for Pirelli regarding the tyres for the 2023 Formula 1 season. The Maranello team was at the Mugello circut yesterday with the F1-75 car in the third day of testing the prototype tires after those that followed the Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna on the 26th and April 27.
Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz took turns at the wheel of the Ferrari car to continue work on the tires that Pirelli intends to bring to the track next year, which should be an evolved version of the 18-inch tyres that made their debut this year with the new generation of ground effect cars.
The two Ferrari drivers were able to evaluate, among others, tyres that will be slightly different than they are today, given the fact that the Pirelli technicians led by Mario Isola are aware the aerodynamic load will increase significantly when the teams succeed to control the effects of porpoising better.
It is worth remembering that the Pirelli tests are “blind”, in the sense that the team must use a car that has already raced, without new solutions, in a set-up that must remain standard throughout the day to facilitate comparisons. The drivers have no idea of constructions and compounds, but they have to limit themselves to driving at a constant pace.
Ferrari was able to take advantage of the opportunity to run on the home track which is well suited to prepare for the British Grand Prix scheduled for next weekend. After the Imola session, there were some strong controversies because Ferrari was unjustly accused of having used an experimental floor (with the skate) that had instead been used in Australia during the first free practice session.
If the Pirelli engineers worked on collecting tire data, which will then be shared with all the other teams, those from Maranello were able to make assessments on a track different than the Canadian one, about the behavior of the F1-75 car on fast corners like the two Arrabbiate that come closest to Copse or to the complex of Maggots, Becketts and Chapel.
