Ferrari is preparing to face the Brazilian Grand Prix, with Charles Leclerc potentially set to receive a penalty — here’s why.
After two strong performances in Austin and Mexico, the Maranello-based team wants to keep the momentum high and aim for even more in the final rounds of the championship. As the team heads to Brazil, Ferrari could make a drastic decision, with Charles Leclerc ready to take a penalty.
The upcoming Formula 1 weekend will feature the return of the Sprint format, on a circuit that could help teams make strategic choices. The Prancing Horse is fighting Mercedes and Red Bull for second place in the Constructors’ Championship, and the remaining races will be decisive in this battle. While much of the attention in the paddock is already turning toward 2026 — with projects well underway — an important doubt has reportedly emerged in Maranello that could lead Charles Leclerc to take a grid penalty.
Leclerc, engine change and penalty to have a fresh power unit for Las Vegas?
According to reports from FUnoAnalisiTecnica, both Ferrari and Mercedes are considering changing engine components in Brazil to ensure a fresh Power Unit for the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Given the layout of the Interlagos circuit, which allows for strong comeback opportunities, starting from the back of the grid would not be a major problem for cars with greater performance compared to midfield teams. For now, this remains only a theoretical possibility — particularly because, if the weather turns out to be as unpredictable as it was in 2024, engine power could become a less decisive factor.
In the “City of Sin,” both teams have traditionally been very competitive since 2023, especially thanks to the smooth asphalt that allows cars to run with a lower ride height. Ferrari is determined not to end the season without a victory. It’s worth noting that Lewis Hamilton already served his engine penalty in Belgium, giving him a wider rotation of components, while Charles Leclerc has been on the limit for quite some time.
The work done in Maranello on reliability has been excellent, but ensuring peace of mind for the end of the season would also be a valuable mental boost. Moreover, even if the performance difference between an old and new Power Unit is not huge, that extra bit of power could make a crucial difference. We will soon find out what Ferrari decides to do.
