“One of our greatest competitors, who we admired greatly. Today we remember Ayrton 28 years on from that day in Imola” – in this way, Scuderia Ferrari on Twitter wanted to dedicate an early morning tribute to the three-time Formula 1 world champion at the wheel of McLaren in 1988, 1990 and 1991 Ayrton Senna, who tragically died 28 years ago following an accident at the Tamburello corner during the first laps of the San Marino Grand Prix.
The paths of Ayrton Senna and Ferrari seemed destined to cross, but in the end they did not despite negotiations that seemed very close to be finalized between ‘Magic’ Ayrton and Cesare Fiorio, at that time team manager of the Maranello team. At Imola, Formula 1 lost an icon in a cursed weekend that cost Roland Ratzenberger’s life the day before (Ayrton Senna had hidden an Austrian flag in the cockpit of his Williams through which he wanted to pay homage to his colleague by dedicating him the victory in the Grand Prix).
The Brazilian driver remains one of the myths of the current generation of drivers represented on the Formula 1 starting grid, from Lewis Hamilton (born in 1985) to Charles Leclerc, who, although he was born three years after 1994, was able to learn about the myth of Ayrton Senna through his father: “My father was a great Ayrton Senna fan and growing up he became my hero too”, the words of the Monegasque driver – “I think every sportsman recognizes how special Ayrton was”, the comment of of Carlos Sainz.
