“The goal of 2022 was to become competitive again, but winning the world title is another level”. Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto was very frank during a recent interview with BBC in not exaggerating the expectations of the Maranello team this season. Ferrari has returned from two unsuccessful seasons and started the 2022 Formula 1 campain with a one-two finish in Bahrain, then confirmed its potential with a splendid with for Charles Leclerc in Australia, alongside Carlos Sainz who also finished on the podium.
The rocket start led to a lot of enthusiasm, but Red Bull’s response came immediately, as did Ferrari’s in terms of positive updates brought at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona. But since then, the reliability problems have been slowing down Charles Leclerc’s dreams of glory. Nevertheless, the Monegasque driver is confident he can still be world champion at the end of 2022.
Whatever the outcome in Abu Dhabi, what matters is that Ferrari is back to being able to have an important role in Formula 1. This was underlined by Ferrari chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna during a speech given at Capital Markets Day, in which he also had the opportunity to present the first industrial plan that bears his signature. In this regard, he outlined an electrification strategy that calls for 40% full-electric vehicles and 40% hybrid models by 2030. Benedetto Vigna confirmed that the first electric car will be presented in 2025, with the first deliveries the following year.
“Our Formula 1 team – the words of Benedetto Vigna – is back at the top of the starting grid and on the top step of the podium, thanks to our talented drivers and the F1-75, which has already shown its ability to fight for race wins. It is truly a great satisfaction for the whole team and for me to see that the hard work begins to pay off. We will continue to fight in every race, always with passion, ambition and the humility that comes from the constant desire to learn” – he said.

Therefore, no blame or accusations from Benedetto Vigna for the recent reliability issues in the last few races, which are seen as part of a necessary growth path given the decision to favor performance in the design and development stage ahead of the current season. These comments will surely please team principal Mattia Binotto and all his men as they attempt to go for redemption in Canada this weekend. But it will not be an easy task for the Maranello team, especially given the fact that Charles Leclerc will most likely be forced to start the race from the midfield zone due to a probable penalty for the introduction of the fourth turbo in 2022.
