“I said it after the last quarter, I am not satisfied with second place because second is first of the losers. We have made some progress. I’m happy with the progress we’ve made. I’m not happy with second place. I think the team has what it takes to improve over time. I think the team has what it takes to improve over time.”
These were the comments made by Ferrari chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna on Wednesday 23 November, when he was a guest of the television broadcaster specializing in economics CNBC, as he was asked to look back on the 2022 Formula 1 world championship which was concluded by Scuderia Ferrari in second place both in the Drivers’ standings with Charles Leclerc and in the Constructors’ standings behind Red Bull, but ahead of Mercedes.
Benedetto Vigna’s words therefore precede Friday’s news regarding the resignation that Mattia Binotto would be ready to hand in. In fact, the CEO expressed satisfaction with the progress highlighted by Ferrari and believes that the team has what it takes to improve, but at the same time admitted he wasn’t happy with the team’s performance after they ended the season second in the constructors championship.
If Mattia Binotto will indeed end his time as Ferrari team principal, in light of Benedetto Vigna’s recent statements, it is clear that the new team boss will have only one only one acceptable result in the 2023 Formula One season: winning the world title. In the week preceding the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the first rumors were reported by the Italian media regarding a change at the top of the Ferrari Racing Division, with Frederic Vasseur indicated as the main favourite to take over from Mattia Binotto starting in January.
