On Friday (November 25), rumors again resurfaced about Mattia Binotto’s imminent seperation from Scuderia Ferrari, despite the fact that the Italian side denied this information in the week leading up to the last round of the 2022 Formula 1 season, Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The suggested method of separation could be that of a resignation handed in by the current Italian team principal, who no longer feel around him the support and confidence from the Ferrari top management necessary to continue.
Several sources speak of chairman John Elkann and chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna’s desire of restructure the Ferrari Racing Division, which has been led by Mattia Binotto since January 2019. The first candidate to take over the position of the Italian engineer would be Frederic Vasseur, his counterpart at Sauber Alfa Romeo, but the change between the two may not be immediate. In fact, the 54-year-old Frenchman “cannot end his contract with Alfa Romeo before January and will only officially sign with Ferrari in 2023”, as stated in the columns from today’s edition of the Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.
During the last month of 2022, the intermin solution to temporarily take charge of the Scuderia from Mattia Binotto (until Fred Vasseur can start in January) could be that of Benedetto Vigna, according to reports from both the Roman newspaper and Corriere della Sera. An idea that was also confirmed by French sports newspaper L’Equipe: “The name of the successor should not be announced before next week, at best. Fred Vasseur, who is considered the favourite, could not be reached on Friday evening because he was busy at the Sauber Christmas party. Chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna should assume the position of interim, until the successor of Mattia Binotto is officially announced.” – Corriere dello Sport reports.
On Wednesday, after the conclusion of the world championship and before the new rumors about Mattia Binotto’s exit, Ferrari chief executive officer Benedetto Vigna had commented on the Maranello team’s 2022 Formula 1 season explaining that he was “not satisfied with second place because second is the first of the losers”, quoting Enzo Ferrari, despite being “satisfied with the progress made“, essentially reiterating what he said a few weeks ago, when he presented the company’s quarterly results.
