After the investigation into Christian Horner’s alleged misconduct, which ended inconclusively (for now), an important issue is still being discussed in the Formula 1 paddock. Following the concerns raised by some Team Principals, Fred Vasseur has also spoken out on the Red Bull – VCARB debate.
Collaborations between teams are not a new thing in the world of Formula 1. For several years, we have seen some teams share, upon purchase, certain components of the car. One of these components is the power unit and the entire rear end, including the gearbox and transmission. However, what is happening between Red Bull and VCARB is generating some debate, with Fred Vasseur expressing his views on the matter.
The first to raise the debate was McLaren’s CEO, Zack Brown, casting doubts on the collaboration between the two “sister” teams. Presenting his reasons, the McLaren CEO expressed concerns about the advantages that could arise from this synergy. To try to downplay the accusations, both Christian Horner and Laurent Mekies defended and played down the relationship between the two teams in the 2024 season. During the interview session dedicated to team principals, where F1inGenerale was also present, Frederic Vasseur was asked for a comment on the issue.
“I think there are two points: The first is team ownership, and the second is the technical regulations. You can imagine collaboration even if you don’t own the same company; it’s possible,” – the Ferrari team principal later added – “There is a clear-cut in the regulations, and it’s up to the FIA to decide if it’s black or white. For me, it’s clear, and so far, it has always been respected.” – the French manager pointed out.
As mentioned earlier, Christian Horner defended dual ownership with an allusion to multi-ownership models in football. Referring to this, Fred Vasseur said: “Ownership, you can certainly imagine the extreme situation in football and the Champions League, for example. However, we must also remember that three or four years ago, we were very happy that Red Bull was there to finance a team when we were in difficulty.” – he concluded.
