Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur has offered fresh insight into the personal relationships he has built with his two Formula 1 stars, revealing that although he enjoys complete trust with Lewis Hamilton, his bond with Charles Leclerc has developed into something much deeper after years of working together.
As Ferrari continues its push for championship success in the 2026 Formula 1 season, Vasseur finds himself managing arguably the strongest driver pairing on the grid. While Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc both play crucial roles in the Scuderia’s resurgence, the Frenchman has acknowledged that his history with Charles Leclerc naturally creates a different dynamic.
A relationship built long before Ferrari
The partnership between Fred Vasseur and Charles Leclerc stretches back well before they were reunited at Maranello. Vasseur was the team principal at Sauber when Charles Leclerc made his Formula 1 debut in 2018 as part of Ferrari’s driver development programme, giving the young Monegasque his first full-time opportunity in the sport.
Although Charles Leclerc moved to Ferrari the following year, the professional relationship continued from a distance until Fred Vasseur replaced Mattia Binotto as Ferrari team principal ahead of the 2023 season. Since then, the pair have celebrated several victories together, including Charles Leclerc’s recent triumph at the British Grand Prix, while helping return Ferrari to regular contention at the front of the grid.
Looking back on their partnership in his autobiography En Piste, Fred Vasseur explained that the connection he shares with the Monegasque extends well beyond the normal relationship between a team principal and one of his drivers.
According to Fred Vasseur, although he has enjoyed close professional relationships with many drivers throughout his career, none has matched the instinctive understanding he has developed with Charles Leclerc. He described their communication as so natural that lengthy conversations are often unnecessary, with simple eye contact frequently being enough for each to understand what the other is thinking.
Lewis Hamilton relationship built on experience and trust
Fred Vasseur also has significant history with Lewis Hamilton. Long before the seven-time world champion joined Ferrari, Lewis Hamilton competed for Vasseur’s ART Grand Prix team during his junior career, establishing a professional relationship that dates back more than two decades.
However, despite that long acquaintance, the two only became daily colleagues again when Lewis Hamilton officially joined Ferrari ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
During a difficult debut campaign with the Scuderia, Lewis Hamilton publicly defended Fred Vasseur when speculation surrounded the Frenchman’s future at Ferrari. The British driver repeatedly highlighted the confidence and mutual respect that existed between them, making it clear that he fully supported Ferrari’s leadership despite the challenges the team was facing.
Fred Vasseur echoed those sentiments in his book, explaining that his relationship with Lewis Hamilton is founded on complete mutual trust. He said both men have absolute confidence in one another after knowing each other for more than 20 years, but admitted that the connection does not reach the same personal level as the one he has developed with Charles Leclerc over many years of working closely together. According to Vasseur, his relationship with Charles Leclerc extends beyond purely professional matters.
Ferrari balancing two championship-calibre drivers
The comments come at a fascinating moment in Ferrari’s evolution. Charles Leclerc recently committed his long-term future to the Scuderia by signing a new contract that could keep him in Maranello well into the next decade, reinforcing Ferrari’s desire to build around one of its home-grown talents.
At the same time, Lewis Hamilton has emerged as Ferrari’s highest-scoring driver during the 2026 campaign. Heading into the Belgian Grand Prix, the seven-time world champion holds a healthy advantage over Charles Leclerc in the Drivers’ Championship after combining impressive consistency with several podium finishes and a race victory.
That competitive balance has inevitably fuelled debate over whether Ferrari should prioritise one driver in its battle against Mercedes for both world championships. Some observers have suggested that the team could eventually introduce clear team orders if doing so significantly improves its title chances.
However, Fred Vasseur has consistently resisted establishing a strict number-one and number-two hierarchy. Instead, Ferrari has continued to allow Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc to compete on equal terms, believing that maintaining harmony between two elite drivers is one of the team’s greatest strengths.
Given the exceptionally close relationship Fred Vasseur has built with Charles Leclerc over almost a decade, together with the immense trust he has developed with Lewis Hamilton, Ferrari appears determined to preserve that balance for as long as both drivers remain firmly in the championship fight. Only if the title picture becomes overwhelmingly one-sided later in the season could the Scuderia reconsider its approach.
