Lewis Hamilton has delivered an encouraging assessment of Ferrari’s current Formula 1 package, arguing that the team has fundamentally built a strong car while identifying power as the clear area in which the Scuderia remains at a disadvantage. The seven-time world champion also believes Ferrari can continue developing the car over the remaining races and potentially reduce part of that gap before the season ends.
His comments offer an important distinction in the assessment of Ferrari’s performance. Lewis Hamilton does not appear to view the team’s current limitations as evidence of a fundamentally flawed chassis concept. Instead, he pointed towards the work carried out at Maranello, the technical choices made during development and the solutions introduced on the car as reasons for optimism.
Lewis Hamilton praises Ferrari innovation and car development
The Briton described Ferrari as having a great car at its core and credited the group working at the factory for making the right decisions. He also highlighted what he sees as an innovative approach from the Italian team during the season.
“I think that, fundamentally, we have a great car. That’s due to an incredible group of people at the factory, who made the right decisions,” Lewis Hamilton explained. “As I said before, we’ve been innovative this year. We’ve had solutions on the car that, quite often, everyone else ended up following.”
That assessment suggests Lewis Hamilton sees Ferrari’s technical direction as one of the stronger elements of the project. His reference to other teams subsequently adopting similar ideas is particularly notable because it underlines his belief that the Scuderia has not simply been reacting to its competitors throughout the season.
Ferrari power deficit remains the main weakness
The area the Briton identified as Ferrari’s clearest disadvantage is power. Unlike aerodynamic development or ongoing car evolution, he presented that limitation as something the team has to manage for the remainder of the current campaign.
“The area where we know we’re at a disadvantage is power, and we have to live with that,” Lewis Hamilton said. “We need to make up that difference next year, so we have to deal with that deficit this season.”
No precise figure was attached to the deficit in these comments, but Lewis Hamilton’s wording makes Ferrari’s short-term challenge clear. The team must continue extracting performance from the package it has while accepting that the larger step required in the power-unit area is expected to come later.
Lewis Hamilton still expects Ferrari to make progress
That does not mean development has stopped. Lewis Hamilton stressed that the Ferrari continues to evolve and expressed hope that further progress across the upcoming races could reduce the overall performance gap.
“But the car continues to evolve, and we still have races ahead in which, I hope, we’ll manage to narrow that gap a bit,” Lewis Hamilton added.
The key point is therefore not that Ferrari expects to remove its entire disadvantage immediately, but that further gains remain possible within the existing package. If the team can continue improving the car while limiting the effect of its power weakness, the final part of the season could provide a clearer indication of how much performance remains available from the current concept.
Lewis Hamilton remains motivated as Ferrari keeps pushing
Lewis Hamilton also made clear that his own motivation remains intact. He said Ferrari is continuing to push, while he remains fit, focused and able to enjoy the racing despite the areas in which the team still needs to improve.
After scoring useful points, the British driver thanked the team and reinforced a message that was more constructive than pessimistic. Ferrari may still have a defined weakness to address, but Lewis Hamilton’s assessment is that the foundations of the car are strong, development is continuing and there are still opportunities to narrow the gap before attention fully turns to solving the power deficit for next season.
