The Catalan Grand Prix weekend marked the rebirth of Lewis Hamilton. After securing his first victory with Ferrari, the seven-time Formula 1 world champion finally put behind him an extremely difficult period, including a 2025 campaign that brought few positive results, plenty of criticism from outside observers, and even moments of personal doubt for the British driver himself.
Coinciding with this sporting resurgence, the most successful driver in Formula 1 history has revealed one of the reasons behind his challenging 2025 season: an injury suffered at the beginning of last year. It was an issue that proved both frustrating and persistent, affecting not only his physical condition but also his first months as a Ferrari driver at Maranello.
The injury occurred in January 2025 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during a TPC test session with the Ferrari SF-23. On that occasion, Sir Lewis crashed heavily in the final sector of the track after losing control of the car.
“It was said to be a minor impact”
At the final corner of the Catalan circuit, the British driver lost control of his Ferrari and struck the barriers at around 200 km/h. The accident caused significant damage to the car, particularly to its aerodynamic components and suspension.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, however, Ferrari stated that the driver was unharmed and had suffered no physical consequences.
According to information that has emerged in recent days, the reality was somewhat different. Hamilton came away from the accident carrying muscle-related issues that made training difficult and even made sitting in the cockpit uncomfortable. While the injury was not serious enough to prevent him from racing, it nevertheless lingered for weeks.
The problem was considered minor, allowing the Briton to pass the FIA medical checks and compete from the opening race of the season. Behind the scenes, however, the former Mercedes driver continued dealing with the effects of the injury before eventually returning to full fitness.
Rumours confirmed
Last year, we reported claims from a respected Spanish journalist who revealed that Lewis Hamilton had been spotted in Spain on several occasions while reportedly visiting a doctor. At the time, neither the doctor’s identity nor the medical specialty involved was disclosed, but the reports suggested the Ferrari driver was dealing with some form of physical issue.
One year later, those rumours appear to have been validated by Lewis Hamilton himself. The reports, which had already found supporting confirmation, have now effectively been reinforced by the Ferrari driver’s own comments.
What stands out most is that during one of the most difficult periods of his career, Lewis Hamilton chose not to make his physical condition public. At a time when revealing the injury could have provided a logical explanation for his struggles, the British driver instead decided to fight through the difficulties in silence, refusing to use the issue as an excuse for a series of underwhelming performances.
