Ferrari and F1 rivals turn final 2026 races into 2027 development battle

Ferrari, Mercedes W17, McLaren McL40, 2026 F1, rear view, engine, power unit

The 2026 Formula 1 season is entering its final phase, but the remaining seven Grands Prix could tell only part of the story. Mercedes has built a lead that increasingly makes the Constructors’ Championship look like a formality, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli is moving towards the same position in the Drivers’ Championship. The advantage accumulated by the young Italian and the Brackley team means the closing races can now be approached from a different perspective: not simply as a search for immediate results, but as preparation for 2027.

To a certain extent, the real championship has already become the battle for next season. The Formula 1 cars seen over the coming weeks will therefore be interesting not only because of what they produce in the standings, but because of what they reveal about the technical directions being pursued by Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull.

F1 teams are already using 2026 to prepare for 2027

Every new floor, aerodynamic revision, power unit intervention for those still able to make one, such as Mercedes, and even apparently minor technical choices could offer clues about the philosophy the leading teams intend to carry into their next projects.

That makes the remaining rounds particularly important because not every team appears to have found the right direction. The full sequence of races still ahead can be followed through the 2026 Formula 1 calendar, but their technical significance may now become more important than the championship picture itself.

Mercedes must understand its latest W17 update

The Mercedes W17 remains the absolute benchmark of the season, but the aerodynamic package introduced by the Brackley team at Sepang produced a highly undesirable effect. Instead of simply improving the car’s performance, the update appeared to expose correlation difficulties and a loss of competitiveness under certain conditions.

That does not necessarily mean the package has been rejected. It does suggest, however, that understanding the behaviour of the new solutions could prove considerably more important than originally expected.

The issue carries additional weight because the package cannot be judged only in the context of the remaining 2026 races. The data gathered on track will inevitably feed into the development of the W18. If a solution produces information that differs from simulation results, the concern extends beyond losing a few tenths in the current championship. It potentially affects the conceptual model on which the next car will be built.

That broader question is especially significant given the performance level already demonstrated by Mercedes this season. The scale of the W17’s advantage and Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s results can also be considered alongside the wider assessment of how dominant the Mercedes W17 has become.

McLaren also needs answers before the MCL41 takes shape

The situation at Woking also deserves attention. After the seasonal break, the McLaren MCL40 had given the impression that it could become a serious threat to Ferrari in the fight to establish itself as the second-fastest team. That progression, however, has not been confirmed with the consistency that might have been expected.

Some of that can naturally be explained by the characteristics of the circuits visited, but the question becomes more interesting when the nature of McLaren’s recent upgrades is considered.

The package introduced by the British team was also expected to provide important indications for the technical direction of the MCL41. If the chosen concept fails to deliver the expected performance, Woking still has time to change course, but the number of available weeks is no longer unlimited.

The conceptual development of the 2027 cars is already entering the stage at which ideas must progressively become physical components, geometries and concrete engineering solutions. That means an incorrect direction identified now could have consequences that extend far beyond one disappointing Grand Prix weekend.

Ferrari must separate SF-26 aero limitations from its power unit deficit

Ferrari is probably the most difficult case to interpret. The SF-26 has shown on several occasions that its chassis and aerodynamic platform can deliver very interesting performance, yet the overall potential continues to be influenced by the behaviour of the power unit.

That overlap makes every recent upgrade difficult to assess. When the SF-26 fails to convert promising aerodynamic behaviour into a competitive overall performance, Ferrari must determine how much of the deficit is coming from the car itself and how much is being created by the power unit.

The Scuderia has already used both of the available ADUO interventions on its 2026 power unit, while the engine project for next year is expected to benefit from much deeper work. The distinction between chassis and engine performance is therefore becoming increasingly important.

Lewis Hamilton has already highlighted Ferrari’s continuing power deficit while also noting that rivals have followed some of the team’s ideas, underlining the complexity of assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the current Ferrari package.

Why identifying Ferrari’s real problem matters for 2027

This is far from an academic distinction. If Ferrari’s main limitation is aerodynamic, Maranello must question whether the development direction of the car is correct. If a significant proportion of the problem instead comes from the power unit, then the interpretation of the SF-26 changes completely.

In that second scenario, the final months of 2026 would become particularly valuable as a data-gathering exercise for defining the characteristics and priorities of the next engine rather than simply an attempt to find more performance from the current aerodynamic concept.

That is why the final races remain highly important for Ferrari even if its championship position becomes largely consolidated. The SF-26 must provide answers about the future as well as the present, with every useful piece of track data potentially becoming a variable in the 2027 project.

The broader technical evolution of the Maranello team can also be followed through the Ferrari technical analysis section, as the separation between chassis performance, aerodynamic efficiency and power unit limitations becomes increasingly important.

Red Bull could become the team that changes the picture

While Mercedes, Ferrari and McLaren are primarily trying to verify whether their respective technical directions are sound, Red Bull represents the most difficult variable to ignore. The RB22 has recently shown signs of improvement that appear to go beyond a single isolated performance.

Max Verstappen looks more comfortable behind the wheel, while the car appears to have recovered some of the predictability needed to allow the four-time world champion to exploit its potential more effectively.

Isack Hadjar has also shown greater consistency towards the upper end of the standings following his period on the sidelines because of injury. That is not yet enough to conclude that Red Bull has returned permanently to the front, but the trend deserves attention.

Red Bull’s new wind tunnel could become crucial

Milton Keynes is also approaching an infrastructure change of major importance, with the team’s new wind tunnel set to become operational and replace the existing Bedford facility.

That is far from a secondary detail. For a team attempting to establish its technical identity around the new generation of regulations, the ability to correlate simulation work, aerodynamic development and track data quickly could become decisive.

For that reason, the team led by Laurent Mekies could become the most interesting operation to monitor during the final seven races. Not necessarily because Red Bull can still completely reshape the 2026 competitive order, but because those weekends could begin to show how much of its recent progress is structural and how much is linked to the specific characteristics of the circuits visited.

F1 teams still have time to correct mistakes, but the window is closing

The decisive factor is timing. Formula 1 teams do not reach the end of the season with a blank sheet of paper and only then begin designing the following year’s cars. The development process is already well advanced.

Ideas are selected, validated and transformed into components before being progressively frozen as the project moves towards the physical production of the cars that will eventually appear in winter testing.

That means mistakes made now can still be corrected, but the available margin is shrinking rapidly. Incorrect aerodynamic correlation, a floor concept that fails to generate the expected load or a solution that behaves differently on track from the simulation can force a team to rethink its technical philosophy just as the next project enters one of its most delicate phases.

The final seven races could reveal more about 2027 than 2026

That is why the final seven Grands Prix could reveal much more than the championship standings suggest. Barring major surprises, the world titles are increasingly heading towards Mercedes and Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

The main sporting contest that remains open concerns the position of second force, with Ferrari attempting to resist pressure from McLaren while Red Bull gradually moves back into the wider picture.

Below the surface, however, another competition is developing that could prove considerably more important over the medium term. Mercedes must understand why its latest package did not immediately produce the expected step forward. McLaren must establish whether its development direction is genuinely the correct one.

Ferrari must definitively separate the limitations of the SF-26 from those of its power unit, while Red Bull must demonstrate that the recent improvement of the RB22 represents the beginning of a new phase rather than a temporary positive spell.

Singapore begins an early preview of the 2027 Formula 1 battle

Singapore and the races that follow could therefore become a kind of preview of the 2027 Formula 1 season. The Marina Bay weekend already presents an important test for the Scuderia, with Ferrari facing specific challenges during the Singapore Sprint weekend.

The championships could be mathematically settled before Abu Dhabi, but Formula 1’s most important technical contest will be far from finished. In fact, once the current title fight appears decided, the details hidden behind new components, revised concepts and changing performance trends could become even more significant.

The 2027 championship may ultimately be influenced, at least in part, by the mistakes identified and the technical insights discovered during these final weeks of 2026. For Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull, the closing races are therefore not simply the end of one season. They are already part of the beginning of the next.
