Scuderia Ferrari seeks redemption at the Temple of Speed. After the underwhelming performances at the Zandvoort circuit, the Prancing Horse team aims to rediscover competitiveness on their home turf, which, at least on paper, should be more favorable to the SF-23 car’s characteristics.
The Maranello team has settled on a low downforce aerodynamic package, introducing a rear wing configuration not seen this year: for the race in front of the Tifosi, the red car will chase top speeds. Thus, it’s not surprising to see a nearly flat main profile with minimal curvature towards the sideplates. Notably, the main plane has a shorter cord than usual, as the movable flap is also nearly flat but with an extended cord and minimal angle of attack.
The Ferrari aerodynamicists are also focusing on achieving good DRS efficiency, despite its traditionally limited impact on performance at Monza. Regarding the rear wing configuration for the 2023 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix weekend, two other intriguing choices stand out: in Maranello, they have chosen to support the wing with dual pillars, forsaking the single-pillar version. Additionally, the support structure for the movable flap isn’t the less resistant one seen at Spa-Francorchamps, but rather the standard solution.
Of course, the front wing also features two upper flaps with a very short cord to minimize resistance against the red car’s progress. Giorgio Piola’s image for Motorsport Italy highlights the livery with the addition of yellow, which is now characteristic of Monza and also pays tribute to the victory of the 499P at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
