
Rumours surrounding Ferrari’s 2026 Formula 1 power unit have intensified during the summer break, with one of the most eye-catching claims suggesting that the Ferrari ADUO upgrade could deliver as much as 30 additional horsepower. Former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola, however, has urged caution over such figures, arguing that modern Formula 1 power unit performance can no longer be judged simply by looking at peak horsepower.
As happens during almost every Formula 1 summer break, the paddock has filled with speculation capable of generating plenty of discussion. One of the most persistent stories concerns Ferrari and the Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities mechanism introduced under the 2026 regulations. The suggestion is that Maranello could use those concessions to recover an extraordinary amount of performance from its power unit.
Thirty horsepower is understandably a figure capable of capturing the imagination of Ferrari fans. But it is also a number that needs to be approached with considerable caution, particularly given how complicated modern hybrid power units have become.
What is ADUO and why does it matter for Ferrari?
ADUO stands for Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities, a regulatory mechanism introduced by the FIA to give power unit manufacturers that fall behind the leading benchmark greater opportunities to develop during the regulatory cycle. The objective is to prevent performance gaps between manufacturers from becoming effectively impossible to recover from during the opening seasons of the new rules.
The system has consequently become one of the major technical talking points of 2026, particularly as the FIA’s ADUO assessment process has come under scrutiny and manufacturers continue trying to understand how much performance can realistically be recovered.
That uncertainty has fuelled increasingly ambitious estimates. At first, rumours suggested gains of around five horsepower. Then the figure became ten, followed by twenty. Now some estimates have reached as high as thirty horsepower.
Ferrari itself has already been working through its development opportunities, with the first Ferrari ADUO power unit development forming part of the team’s attempt to reduce its deficit. The question, however, is whether figures as large as 30 horsepower are genuinely realistic.

During an interview with Italian media, former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola urged Formula 1 followers to keep their expectations grounded.
Luigi Mazzola recalled an era of Formula 1 that was completely different from today. Manufacturers were able to conduct extensive track testing, continuously develop their engines and experiment with different configurations. Engineers could work with varying internal geometries, bore dimensions and stroke lengths, giving power unit departments far more freedom than they have under the current regulations.
The opportunities for development were therefore enormously greater. Yet even with that technical and regulatory freedom, finding another 30 horsepower was far from straightforward.
Modern Formula 1 presents a very different environment. Much of the development work is now carried out in engine cells and on test benches, while the opportunities to validate changes through unrestricted track running are far more limited. That makes claims of enormous performance jumps particularly difficult to assess before the components have actually been used in competitive conditions.
Ferrari’s current need for further development has already been highlighted by analysis of the SF-26, with the importance of the next ADUO development step becoming increasingly clear during the first half of the championship.
Why horsepower alone no longer explains F1 power unit performance
There is an even more important part of the discussion that can easily be overlooked. Formula 1 power units are still regularly discussed almost exclusively in terms of horsepower, as though the championship were operating under the same technical conditions as it did 20 years ago.
With modern hybrid systems, however, the absolute power produced by the internal combustion engine only tells part of the story. The overall efficiency of the complete power unit, its electronic management and the software controlling every phase of its operation can be just as important as the headline horsepower figure.
What matters is how efficiently the system uses the energy available to it. Engineers must consider how quickly energy can be recovered under braking, how effectively the battery is managed and, crucially, how long the power unit can maintain a high level of performance throughout an entire lap.
A power unit that appears slightly less powerful on paper can therefore prove considerably more competitive if it makes better use of electrical energy, maintains more consistent power delivery and operates its hybrid components more efficiently. This broader efficiency challenge is one reason why Ferrari’s deficit cannot be assessed purely through an estimated horsepower number, with the team also working to address the SF-26’s efficiency and acceleration weaknesses.
Ferrari must balance performance gains with reliability
There is another factor that is often underestimated: reliability. Even if a manufacturer genuinely succeeds in finding a significant increase in performance, that does not automatically mean it has produced a power unit capable of surviving the demands of an entire Formula 1 season.
Ferrari experienced that problem in 2017, when reliability issues during the second part of the championship ultimately damaged the team’s attempt to fight for the Formula 1 world title.
Any performance increase must therefore coexist with durability, fuel consumption, thermal management and component life. Extracting more power is only useful if the power unit can sustain that level of performance without creating unacceptable reliability consequences elsewhere in the system.
That balance remains central to Ferrari’s current programme. Maranello has been conducting extensive work ahead of future developments, including reliability testing connected to its planned Monza power unit upgrade.
Luigi Mazzola says the track must decide Ferrari’s real ADUO gains
ADUO undoubtedly represents an important tool for manufacturers attempting to recover lost ground under the 2026 Formula 1 regulations. What it does not represent is a magic wand capable of suddenly producing dozens of additional horsepower without technical compromises or development challenges.
As Luigi Mazzola emphasised, the real value of the upgrades will ultimately be established on track rather than through speculative figures circulating during the summer break.
Instead of concentrating exclusively on horsepower numbers that are extremely difficult to verify from outside the teams, the more revealing questions will concern how efficient Ferrari’s evolved power unit becomes, how effectively it manages its electrical energy and how advanced its control software proves to be.
The ability to exploit every available joule, maintain strong deployment throughout the lap and combine internal combustion performance with the hybrid system will provide a far more meaningful indication of Ferrari’s progress than any isolated estimate of horsepower.
That is the fundamental challenge of modern Formula 1. Declared engine power alone no longer determines which manufacturer has the strongest package. The decisive factor is the efficiency of the complete hybrid system, and that is where the real battle of the 2026 power unit regulations will be fought.
