Positive tests for Ferrari in Barcelona ahead of the 2024 Formula 1 championship: the innovations studied by the former Red Bull engineer are working. 2024 will be a crucial year for the Maranello team and their drivers. For Charles Leclerc, to consolidate his role as the lead driver while awaiting Hamilton’s arrival. But also for Carlos Sainz, who found himself without a seat for the upcoming Formula 1 season and in search of a cockpit.
The red duo met in Barcelona for the Pirelli tests. The tire supplier’s program involved wetting the track for rain tire development. However, the bans imposed due to the drought affecting the Iberian Peninsula shifted the focus to the 2025 tires.
Taking advantage of the dry asphalt, alongside the SF-23, the F1-75 also took to the track. The two regular drivers alternated behind the wheel for the first time in 2024.
As reported by Motorsport.com, Ferrari technicians seized the opportunity to work on managing the hybrid system. Indeed, in energy deployment, the Scuderia had made an undeniable leap forward during the 2023 Formula 1 season. This was thanks to solutions implemented by David George, an engineer poached from Red Bull.
Under David George’s guidance, it took about two years in Milton Keynes to develop the current management of the MGU-K.

The advantages reported by the Ferrari drivers:
The development process in Maranello is not complete, but the drivers have reported good sensations.
Firstly, there’s less tire degradation, linked to a smoother power delivery, allowing for a more consistent race stint in terms of lap times. There have also been improvements in the Power Unit department. Despite the F1-75 being equipped with a non-latest-generation engine, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz were able to access more power on the straights, reducing clipping before braking.
All positive signs in a 2024 Formula 1 season where Ferrari aims to position itself as the main challenger to the so far unreachable Red Bull.
