Johnny Herbert Suggests Fernando Alonso Could Outperform Lewis Hamilton if in Equal F1 Machinery
Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert has expressed the belief that Fernando Alonso would have the edge over Lewis Hamilton in a direct showdown if both were given identical cars. The two drivers were teammates at McLaren during the 2007 season, which marked Lewis Hamilton’s rookie year, and both finished the year level on points.
Since that season, Lewis Hamilton has enjoyed a remarkable career, accumulating seven World Championship titles and cementing his place as one of the sport’s greatest drivers. However, the 41-year-old seven-time champion endured a challenging first season with Ferrari in 2025, failing to score a single podium and struggling to find consistency with the Scuderia’s machinery.
Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso has also faced limitations with less competitive cars in recent seasons at Aston Martin. Despite this, Johnny Herbert has been impressed by Alonso’s ability to extract maximum performance from machinery that is often not at the front of the field.
Herbert commented on the Stay On Track podcast that if he had to choose between the two drivers based purely on current ability in equal cars, Fernando Alonso would likely get the nod. He highlighted Alonso’s skill in consistently finding extra performance, even when operating in a car that is not fully competitive.
In contrast, Johnny Herbert noted that Lewis Hamilton appeared frustrated and uncertain in the second half of the 2025 season, as he struggled to adapt to Ferrari’s car and could not overcome the performance issues that plagued him. According to Johnny Herbert, the Briton seemed “lost” during several race weekends, unable to identify solutions to the challenges he faced, while Charles Leclerc appeared to adapt more effectively and find better performance.
Johnny Herbert emphasized that the difference came down to the ability to extract performance under difficult circumstances. While Lewis Hamilton has proven over his career to be exceptionally adaptable and fast, his struggles in 2025 with Ferrari contrasted sharply with Fernando Alonso’s capacity to get the most out of Aston Martin’s machinery, demonstrating that raw skill and adaptability remain crucial in Formula 1.
With both drivers continuing into the 2026 season, Johnny Herbert’s analysis raises intriguing questions about how Hamilton and the Spaniard will perform when given equally competitive cars, and whether the veteran Spanish driver could edge out the seven-time world champion in a direct head-to-head comparison.
