In defense of Lewis
In what is probably – at least in terms of results – the most challenging year of his Formula 1 career, Lewis Hamilton has received support from one of his historical rivals in the sport: Fernando Alonso. The English driver moved to Ferrari this year but has struggled to achieve notable results. In the first 14 Grands Prix, he has won a Sprint race but has not yet finished on the podium in a full Grand Prix, unlike Charles Leclerc, who has already claimed five podiums.
Before the summer break, Lewis Hamilton had even told cameras that Ferrari might have been better off “finding another driver” to replace him. These words of frustration sparked a heated debate around the seven-time world champion. On the Thursday of the Dutch Grand Prix in Zandvoort, traditionally the day dedicated to media sessions, Fernando Alonso stepped in to defend his former teammate, highlighting the value of a driver like Hamilton.
“I think from the outside you can never really know what is happening, but Lewis doesn’t need to prove anything,” commented the Asturian driver, who knows well how difficult it can be to succeed in a unique environment such as Ferrari. “Lewis is an incredible driver and sooner or later he will reach his maximum pace. He and Ferrari will always be a partnership to respect greatly,” Fernando Alonso added.
Maximizing results
The Aston Martin veteran also spoke about his own situation, outlining something of a strategy for the remaining ten races of the season: “I think it’s clear to everyone that there will be positive weekends and negative weekends,” concluded the #14. “We must accept this and be aware of it, and on the negative weekends we still have to try to score the last points available. On the positive weekends, we cannot make mistakes. We need to be ready, perform well in those weekends, and score as many points as possible, as we did in Hungary.” – the former Ferrari driver concluded ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
