Despite finishing with equal points, Fernando Alonso managed to prevail over Charles Leclerc, concluding the 2023 season in fourth place. An incredible result for the Spaniard and Aston Martin, considering the pre-season expectations. A more disappointing outcome for the Monegasque, who just twelve months earlier had beaten Sergio Perez to secure second place in the championship, also in the final race in Abu Dhabi.
Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc with equal points: the Spaniard prevails thanks to final placements.
Both the Monegasque and the Asturian concluded the championship with 206 points, just ahead of Lando Norris, who stopped at “only” 205, despite an incredible comeback by the McLaren driver in the second part of the season.
According to the F1 regulations, in case of a tie, the final position is determined by the higher number of victories among the involved drivers. In the case of Charles Leclerc and Fernando Alonso, neither of them crossed the finish line first in the 2023 Formula One season.
Even the comparison of second-place finishes could not determine the victory of one over the other since, thanks to the Ferrari driver’s second-place finish, achieved in the last race of the season in Abu Dhabi, both collected the same number of second places in 2023.

The decisive factor became the placements on the third step of the podium. Fernando Alonso’s five third-place finishes, compared to Charles Leclerc’s three, allowed the Spaniard to finish the season in fourth place. A result certainly not taken for granted, considering the sharp decline in performance suffered by the AMR23 from the summer break onwards.
