Is Formula 1 becoming a ‘made in USA’ sport? After its debut in Miami in 2022, this year adds a third race on American soil in Las Vegas. In reality, the race returns to the calendar for the first time since 1982.
The new entry has already been anticipated as one of the events of the year, akin to the Super Bowl. Who remembers the 2022 podium with confetti and American football helmets? But let’s be cautious not to overdo it: we’re still talking about a dangerous sport where drivers risk their lives.
In recent years, interest in Formula 1 has grown dramatically, especially in the Americas. Proof of this is the attendance record set last year in Austin, and even the sale of tickets for the Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in some supermarket chains.
A significant part of the credit goes to the Netflix docuseries Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which has turned the sport into a global phenomenon.
However, former 1978 world champion Mario Andretti has invited Formula 1 not to push too far: there are already three races in the USA. Another one isn’t needed, and it could detract from capitalizing on the sport’s growth in the New World.
“You can overdo it, but up to a certain extent,” Andretti explained in an interview with the media. “There’s no other country in the world with three Formula 1 events, so let’s be content with this and make the most of it.”
And finally, there’s an invitation to Formula 1 not to go further and “try to outdo itself.”
