The reasons behind Ferrari’s difficult 2025 campaign are numerous, ranging from cancelled upgrades to millions of euros spent without bringing any real performance gains. With the season now close to its conclusion, it has become clear to everyone that this has been a year to forget for the Maranello team. Ferrari’s 2025 season turned into a genuine nightmare, with development steps that failed to deliver the expected progress and a budget that was not managed effectively. The problems became evident immediately after the summer break, a phase of the championship that last year had allowed Frederic Vasseur’s team to re-enter the fight for the constructors’ title, eventually won by McLaren.
The first races after the “holidays” were a rude awakening for both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. The SF-25 struggled to adapt to the new upgrades, which were supposed to help Ferrari close the gap to their rivals. Instead, the car dropped to fourth place in the standings, revealing a package unable to extract the promised performance.
The truth behind the cancelled upgrades
To make matters worse, several planned updates never made it onto the car. After noticing the SF-25’s issues during pre-season testing, Ferrari’s engineers began working on possible solutions. One of the most anticipated developments was the new rear suspension, tested first at Mugello and later introduced at Spa. The results, however, were far from encouraging, despite the significant financial investment required. According to reports from funoanalisitecnica, what was supposed to be Ferrari’s turning point cost approximately two and a half million euros.
Looking back, that budget could have been allocated very differently — and the failed upgrade effectively blocked the arrival of other developments. Moreover, according to the Italian outlet, Ferrari’s engineers had realised in advance that the new rear suspension did not provide any real benefits. In the end, a development package that on paper should have pushed the team back towards the top instead became the final nail in the coffin for the Scuderia’s hopes in 2025.
