A controversial wall
There is a significant change at the Montreal circuit for the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix. The layout of the circuit, named after Gilles Villeneuve, has not changed by a single meter, but a new barrier has been installed between Turn 1 and Turn 2, making it impossible to ‘cut’ the right-hander after the change of direction following the first 90-degree left turn.
If there are any mistakes at that point, the drivers will be forced to make a maneuver close to reversing in order to regain the track. This is a novelty that will have to be taken seriously by the drivers in approaching Turn 1, especially considering the forecast of rain for Friday and Saturday, with Sunday expected to be less prone to precipitation in an ever-changing weather scenario.
Furthermore, it should not be underestimated that in a duel, a ‘push’ from the defending or attacking driver on the inside towards the opponent could cost the latter a significant loss of time. In today’s early free practice sessions, we will be able to assess the behavior of the drivers and the consequences of any errors at a very delicate point during qualifying, as there is a risk of approaching it with the tire not yet at the optimal temperature. Another ‘wall’ in addition to the champions’ wall at the exit of the final chicane.
