Ferrari proved to be in great shape during the Bahrain tests, but some believe the team also held back. The SF26 drew attention in the paddock over the three days of testing, showcasing innovative solutions that have been difficult to copy – something not seen in recent years. Then, Charles Leclerc’s long-run performance during the morning of the final day caught more eyes than the fastest lap set later in the afternoon.
Reliability and engine performance stand out
Despite the words of Frédéric Vasseur and Charles Leclerc, who preach calm, certain data cannot be ignored. Ferrari demonstrated impressive reliability from its new power unit, an aspect that also contributed to Haas enjoying its best pre-season in years. The engine managed to cover a distance equivalent to over 10 Grand Prix between Barcelona and the first Bahrain tests, being replaced only for the last three days.
Poker faces and development potential
The SF26 is still presented, even with new solutions, as a baseline car with huge development potential. Not surprisingly, the team principal emphasized that continuous, targeted upgrades throughout the season will be fundamental. It wouldn’t be a problem if Ferrari arrived at the first race a few tenths behind Mercedes – with such an aggressive development path, nothing is lost.
According to some sources, Ferrari did not reveal its full potential. Matteo Bobbi, reporting for SkySportF1 Italia, revealed that the SF26 ran its qualifying simulation with 30–40 kg of fuel and a conservative engine mode.
Lewis Hamilton shows connection with the SF26
What also surprised the paddock were the poker faces shown by the team personnel. Among the drivers, Lewis Hamilton appeared the most connected to the new SF26, transforming his previously tired expression into a much more confident and smiling one during media interviews. This aspect has always been important in Lewis’s career, and he said he was truly satisfied with the new car, which also contains his DNA.
Looking ahead to the first race
In short, Ferrari may not yet start the season as the favorite, but the team seems to have all the right tools to fight for something significant – something that has been missing in Maranello since 2008. Whether this will be the year remains to be seen, but the progress shown by the Scuderia in certain areas is a reason for optimism.
